I was going to get an interface eventually however, looking into different avenues so at the moment is outputing from the ipad a bad or OK method to do so?.

Sounds exactly the same as with those fancy Interfaces.
Just not very loud, turning up the gain on yor mixer a bit solves that.

What is it you are using the iPad for?
For playing live, it's at least advisable to run the output into a 2 channel direct box. If you are wanting to record the output into a DAW then it will sound pretty good depending on the quality of the cables used as long as you keep the cable lengths short.
An interface with balanced outputs will have a lower noise floor (better signal to noise ratio) and allow you to use longer runs of cables without compromising sound quality.

Disclaimer: I am not one of those people who can hear the coins jingling in the conductor's pockets during a symphonic performance, but I do consider myself amongst those with reasonable critical listening skills.

Not live its basically just home bedroom studio making beats:), my new mixer is going to arrive so was just thinking of routing the headphone out to the mixer and recording stuff into the MPC. I was going to use the ipad as rompler alongside traktor to sample stuff.

Any recommendations for cables then?.

The istudio looks nice but the fact I can't hook up the midi usb keyboard as its usb only and midi out means my new midi controller be redudant.

Isn't audio from the headphone jack means it's thru some kind of amplifier, and thus it is not the same from the dock connector (like using Alesis IO dock), is it?

And then, tho I'm not sure, the iPad4's lightning connector is digital, so things gets more complicated where to A/D D/A conversion occur and all, right?

I need to be enlightened myself..

With an iPad 1, 2, or 3 this will give you better results than the headphone jack, because it bypasses the headphone amp: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00499 ... UTF8&psc=1. It's cheap. Won't work with the Lightning connector, but there might be an equivalent. For around $30, you might also consider the Behringer UCA-202 or UCA-222, which gives you audio input and output.

yeah, I've heard audio from the dock connector has slight better bass than headphone jack. I'm interested in how much difference in there.

The lightning connecter seems it equips a D/A convertor chip inside so then an external device can pull analogue singnal just like before iPad4. I'm not sure if there's a way to pull digital signal (for one less D/A conversion).

With the iPhone devices, the output impedance of the headphone output amplifier of the device has changed somewhat with the various models.

This isn't something published by Apple, but there is a guy who measures it - I'll find the site, give me a moment....

You could plug the MIDI controller and something like the Behringer UCA-202 into a powered USB hub, then plug the hub into your iPad via CCK. (This is what I usually do.)

The other question is, what are you recording into? If it's your iPad, Audiobus will channel the audio directly from many apps into your recording app, with no analogue conversion.

be recording bass and tracking out my mpc to the ipad really.

I like the idea of the powered hub but don't like the fact behringer uses rca for inputs and outputs surely thats not going to be a huge improvement over the headphones?.

The advantage of the Behringer isn't a better cable, it's that you're bypassing the iPad's headphone amp for a cleaner signal. But I'm not trying to push this solution (or recommend it over one of the docks).

Is outputting from the ipad headphone adequate?
