Just wondering if there is a way to control apps ,by other apps, using coremidi?
Eg. Can I use Beatmaker 2 to sequence Nave ? I realise I can record the audio from Nave into BM2 using Audiobus, but I'd like the process to be more refined and integrated.

Virtual MIDI works pretty well, but Midi Clock Sync is pretty poor. So, in short, yes you can--with caveats.

How do I go about doing it? For a device which concentrates so much on it's music capabilities, the ipad does make some thing very difficult. Eg. using apps combined with other apps, and also sharing audio between apps and the outside world.

It's not that complicated- if the apps can send or receive virtual MIDI, they are going to have a way to set the source or destination.
Just open them up and check it out, it should make sense when you are looking at it...

In this specific instance - if Nave is already open, launch Beatmaker 2 and start a new project. Select the keyboard instrument and choose "Empty Preset". Click the " Gear" and open the MIDI options. Make sure the Output to Nave is turned on and click the MIDI Out and Clock Send buttons as well. You should now be able to play Nave from the keyboard within Beatmaker 2, as well as sequence it from the transport. If you experience difficulties open Nave and make sure Background Audio is on as well as checking Nave's own MIDI setup. Hope that helps!
