So can anyone of you guys that have been using Logic Pro X more in depth for a few days answer these questions for me?


1. Does Logic Pro X finally have midi out support for AU plugins?

2. Does the arpeggiator support midi out so you can record the midi pattern to a track?

1. No, unfortunately

2. No, but you can drag and drop the arp pattern to a MIDI track (see pic)

Yes, you can turn on/off any channel strip elements in both the arrange channel strips and the mixer channel strips independently (and the track header as well).

Regarding '1.' - that is a real pain . I'm using bidule to route midi because of it.
Can midi between tracks and plugins be routed in the environment ? I'm not familiar with it. Any tutorials on the web if so?

AU plug-ins don't have MIDI outs per se, but they can create their own system-wide MIDI outputs that can be routed anywhere, i.e. they'd show up in Audio MIDI Setup and as a MIDI device in Logic. Which is absolutely fab, unless...

.. the trouble therein is, many people suspect that there would be timing problems if an AU is on one channel and it's MIDI is taken from another. But if however MIDI is routed from, say, an AU effect on a track to an Instrument track that has an external side chain from former track, then the timing should be spot on - in theory.

Also I'm not sure if projects open properly in Logic (or other hosts) because the MIDI out AU has to be opened first before any tracks can be set up that receive MIDI from it.

So, yeah, MIDI out for AUs has been a long standing feature request from developers to the CoreAudio team. I haven't been following things for a while, I only remember a draft from 2003 that wasn't so great. I guess most developers simply gave up on the issue. Maybe we should revive a petition...

Sugar Bytes can send to system ports in Consequence and Thesys. Would be nice to see Reaktor and Maschine do it also.

From what I can see you still have to set it as midi controllable effect via a bus. This does have a benefit of being able to create multi output effects.

I see. Thank you for the answers. I guess I won't be buying LPX then. A Pro sequencer that in 2013 that can't do things other DAWS can. Sad.
Fortunately, I do have Ableton Live 9 which can do the things I want to do with VST's, so I will use Live.
Maybe Apple should listen to us all who make electronic music, and need the more "advanced" and non traditional features.
I have mailed them about the midi out and smarter routing options. The Environment was obviously not made for musicians that focus on making music with Logic. I can't speak for others, but I don't care about some environment to do basic things in a sequencer that should be available in there by default from a menu or a track inspector. I should not have to create functions or features myself when i make music. Not really what we musicians and producers want to focus on. I guess this is what happens when non musicians make music apps for musicians.


Well, does the capture feature in the arpeggiator cache the whole chord sequence, say over 8-32 bars on a track, so that you can drag that to another track or export it for remixing?

Ableton Live can't handle sysex, which I need for hardware synths. Unbelievable that a Pro sequencer in 2013 can't do the basic things I need to create music

Fortunately, I do have Ableton Live 9 which can do the things I want to do with VST's

With Ableton it does send midi out from VSTi's but merges all the channels into one so midi channel 1.2,3 etc get sent out as one midi channel. Receiving midi from multi channels externally like a controller etc you can set different midi tracks to accept the different channels but not coming from Vsti. They are merged. I was hoping this had changed in Live 9 but I couldn't get it to work differently from before so I guess it is the same. Cubase works and I think Protools works though I haven't tried with 11.

I think Cubase has the most flexible MIDI handling of the main hosts. It's a bit tedious to set up - a MIDI transformer is required on each track to block notes from unwanted interface + channel combinations, but it does work.

This is the one limitation of Logic that I would like to see fixed, but I'm not holding my breath. Kind of annoying, because Mainstage can address each interface separately so I don't see why it isn't possible in Logic.

It's party comments like this that prevent things from going forward. What you don't understand you make fun of. What category of people do you belong to?
If you lack imagination, and vision, you might as well give up.
Pretty obvious it does not hinder most types of music production, but I never said that. Did I?
Sysex is a dated specification, but there are freeware apps that can handle it for you.
Most of us work in 2013, not 1993, with old romplers.
