You need a high tolerance for frustration because getting this stuff to work the way YOU need it to work is a nearly endless job.

always program whole, complete pieces of music (songs) instead of sitting there mixing and 'mastering' 32 bars endlessly. afterwards worry about sounding 'good'. 99% of the people in the world care about songs. the other 1% are producers. it's a tight wire and if you feel like you might fall don't fall on the 1% side.
it is more important to come up with a good name and reason to be for a song than it is to mix it perfectly.
on the other hand, don't sound like total shit. i do it all the time, but don't take my advice!

All you need is love, I think someone once said... allegedly.

Just make the music that you enjoy (failing that go for a walk, watch some porn, have a fight with a random bloke until something else happens).
