I'm looking for a singer but I'm lost :(

Hello everyone.

I'm a french amateur composer and I'm actually working on a project that involve an english speaking female singer.

The piece takes place within a medieval inn.
There's a few musicians playing some old instruments such as Bass Viola di Gamba and Zither... And among them there's a female singer, which sings over their music. I'm looking for an accent which would sound a bit folk : irish, asian, japanese... no matter the region, but I don't want some american/UK pop I don't want lyrical voice like in operas. And I would like a singing comfortable with high notes. A bit like that =>

Now I'm adressing your community : do you know where I could find this profile on the internet ? I'm able to "pay" the singer, but not according to a professionnal retribution. Unfortunately I don't know what are the common remunerations for this kind of order... It's the first time I work with other musicians.

So if you could provide me some advices and tips I would really appreciate it

You could try Indaba Music. I haven't used it myself, but I've read about others that have found singers, etc. to work with using it.

Her demos are tremendous. And her voice is extremely interesting.

But I feel her "french" accent way too much, and I'm afraid it'd cause problems toward our work, because the "song" of the medieval minstrel is supposed to be unbridled. You know, there's a lot of words which are chained very quickly, according to a fast tempo.

And quite the reverse, her singing "takes its time" and prolong each syllabe, so I'm almost sure she'll be ill-at-ease with this project.

Not many answers... Hiring singers on the internet is maybe rare?

In my experience, finding a good singer is as rare as finding a crisp 100 dollar bill laying on the street.

There are many people who love to sing, rather than knowing how to sing. Which means loads of hours of retakes, comping and Melodyn:ing. And if you find someone that actually have a voice that you are looking for and have the knowledge to control it, next obstacle comes in form of a bloated ego. Most talented singers I worked with generally believe that their voice is a gift from the gods and they will constantly challenge you with asking to do more takes (although it's already good enough) or look at you if you were a slimy bug annoying them if asking to - pretty pleeease - do one more take?

What I am describing is of course the amateur and semi-professional singers. I will never ever work a singer in those categories again. It just takes time, doesn't produce good results and pisses me off. If I ever will work with a singer again - that will be with a professional one. But that costs real money.

So what I am saying is that try to avoid the enthusiastic amateurs and the stiff upper lip wanna-bees (and I include those morons from all those Popstar TV-shows in that category). Save money and go as pro as you possibly can get. You'll save time and sanity that way.

I know this problem... I would even jump from the moon to get a REAL PROFESSIONAL singer like Aretha Franklin or someone who really knows to sing with EXPRESSION & DEVOTION, not only like with their children at the good night session while sandman is entering...

Here she is Jonte Short. The guitarist from the Fine Young Cannibals found her singing in church. He formed a band with her called Fried, recorded one album, and disappeared.

This appearance on Jools Holland in 2004 blew me away (especially from 3:00 onwards). I can't understand why she is not making records.
