Are you sure it was this summer?

Summer ends on September 22nd so they still have some time on that deadline.. even though they originally stated that deadline wasn't set in stone.

All the bellyaching, passive aggressive cat photos, and debating hasn't seemed to change their goal of releasing their product when they feel it is ready to be released... which could be anytime between today and any time in the future.

I don't know where you get your information. According to those in the know it is "Coming Soon". :hihi:

That's a lot more accurate a date than anything Bitwig have provided so far... :hihi:

Well, they certainly didn't follow normal industry patterns. Not only did they give the 1.0 feature set almost two years ahead of release, they even talked about version 2 features before version 1 even hit the street.

They've fully committed by doing that. So if they run into technical issues with the already announced v2 features I suppose they'll have to put off v2 until they can actually make all that happen.

I suppose we'll see, in the longer term, if that strategy pays off. One thing for sure, they aren't lacking confidence.

I don't personally see the value in announcing "clever" features so far in advance that it gives potential competitors plenty of time to trump you. On the surface it seems counterproductive, but I do give them the benefit of the doubt, not knowing them.

Me either. It seems rather obvious now that announcing 2 years early with such a huge fanfare and then closing the spout like they did was counter-productive to them. Especially when they had generic screenshots of version 2 features already at announcement of version 1!!!

I'm thinking they are a fairly young group that is very excited to be doing what they are doing... and their company is very programmer/developer driven. This seems in contrast to the other firms that are marketing and sales driven. So they approached marketing in a completely different (backwards?) manner.. but their consumer base is not used to that. Nor are they used to waiting for so long.

Actually, I'm not even sure they have a fulltime marketing/sales person(s)... it might be all developers there... hence the unusual marketing concepts.

I've worked for a couple of companies like that. Great ideas, but little knowledge of how the market works.

One of them got things off the ground, delivered and started the build the business. Unfortunately the creditors came knocking once huge debts had built up and the company had little option but to fold, even though they had a good product.

And getting developers to give estimates of when they will complete a piece of work?

Yeah. Way too early is probably not good in most cases.

I recall that Studio One first announced in April '09 and people were getting impatient waiting to try it. It didn't launch until September, 6 months later. It annoyed some people I think, the hype but no access to the product.

I also recall them saying they probably won't ever do that again, won't officially announce anything about it unless it's ready to go within 30 days, although they might have inadvertentenly / partially broken that rule with 2.6.

But generally speaking, I'd be surprised to officially hear about any major version that's not close to release. No real point in annyoying customers and potential customers unnecessarily. Or giving potential competitors an early peek.

That's all the Bitwig thing really is for some people, annoying, because they were excited about it.

Anyway, Logic X certainly got the full benefit of complete surprise. :)

I don't know.
Okay, people are grumpy that they can't get their hands on it, but the moment it will be released, a lot of people will try it out, no matter what is said now.

If at that moment the software is great, all this bitching and debating will be in the past and cats will maybe remain a Bitwig insider joke for years, but other than that, I can't see much harm done.
How many people will say: "Bitwig was announced too early, I will not give it a try"?

If we all would have never heard of Bitwig and it would be released tomorrow, a lot more marketing effort would have to be invested to get to the same level of basic interest.
For a released app this may be different, but I personally would love to have roadmaps for more of my software.

I also thought that competition may steal ideas from them, but so far it doesn't look like it. Live 9 was a chance that wasn't taken (in many regards). So far I'd say it's still pretty unique in many areas where it counts. And some of the main features would need major rewrites in other DAWs.

I personally wish them all the best.
Which will be the best for all of us as well actually ;-)

Cheers,

Tom

Quite possibly.

I vaguely remember that.. I thought it was going to be fantastic.. the hype surrounding it.. the excited forum posts.. until I tried the eventual demo and discovered it was not for me at all. :dog:

Don't think BWS will be this way, however, since it essentially appears to be a redesigned Ableton Live. (and I can work in that environment)

That said.. releasing a beta (which I doubt they will do at this point) would have been super for many reasons.. beneficial to both endusers and developer...

My hosts do more than bitwig.

When does someone start the 'one bitwig only' thread?

Once they release it? Better stock up waiting!
