Not quite but at least you seem to have gotten the Eno "angle"...

Let's see if we can get close to ending this thing:

Question #1: this keyboardist/composer a few years later joined a group led by a famous Jazz trumpeter who was perhaps the most influential Jazz musician of the second half of the 20th century. In the late 1960s they recorded a couple of albums (on which he composed as well as played) which were quite controversial because they incorporated electronic instruments and elements of rock music. They are often cited as having given birth to the Jazz fusion and Jazz rock genres.

So #1 is Herbie Hancock?

Herbie was in that band when they still played real Jazz! :x :hihi:

Funny thing, with the passing of George Duke, I was just thinking about him. Not too many of that generation left... :(

Eno references Zawinul on Another Green World

Zawinul played with Miles. Is Austria the link?

Let's say, just hypothetically speaking, that it, or some famous city with a long history of great music contained in that landlocked nation, was the link.

If so, could someone maybe now be able to answer all of the questions 1 through 4 from the original post?

And, who knows, a good deal of the answers might already have been thrown around (or pretty darn close).

Vienna must be the city then

Post

So? Doesn't anybody wanna win this thing? Think of the rewards! :hihi:

OK, so what's basically known or has been suggested so far:

1. A Jazz artist, possibly from Vienna, who probably played with Miles Davis in the late 1960s and Eno might have composed the piece Zawinul/Lava in honor of.

2. A triskaidekaphobic very influential 20th century composer who someone suggested could be Arnold Schoenberg who is usually associated with a group of composers referred to as The Second Viennese School.

3. Korngold, who once famously said, "We thought of ourselves as Viennese; Hitler made us Jewish."

4. A movie with Ethan Hawke in it, probably one which has to do with the common link and was directed by a guy who once used a creative technique introduced by Eno. (Hint: it's definitely not the one that takes place in Paris! :hihi:)

I guess the movie isn't Training Day either... :hihi:

Can't say I know many Ethan Hawke movies

#4 Before Sunrise

Alright, it's been a week and it's time to move over. All the questions have been answered, one way or another. And since no one seems to want to just post them all at one time, let's just declare a shared prize: SODDI, who guessed possibly the most difficult one without even asking for a clue; Robojam, who continues to devote himself to this thing and knew the Schoenberg phobia; and seismic1 who in whatever round about way got the other two. Whichever one of you wants to go next, just do it.

I'll go with a link to the piece referred to in question #1 from that funky dude from Vienna.

The tune was covered, with lyrics, by a very popular top 40 band of that time, The Buckinghams and was predictably more successful (although both versions were considered to be "hits") Of course, that relatively early in his career, Zawinul probably didn't mind the additional exposure...nor the royalties.
