i used Cubase for years (since 3.5) switched to Frooty last fall, then went back to Cubase. Frooty Poo can pretty much do everything, but it has some shortcomings:

- VSTi don't respond to CC messages unless you link the controllers
- automation is clunky (controller lanes & envelopes with breakpoints are better, but the LFO functions are cool)
- can't view multiple parts at once (helpful when trying to harmonize or try to balance the bass/kick)
- ReWire implementation is REALLY clunky (transports between master/slave are not linked and the special rewire window is BS)

aside from that it's a helluva better option than Reason.

When it come to my tracks, everything begins with FL Studio.

1) Hands down, it's the best drum machine software of all time (not Battery, DR-008, Attack, microTONIC, Orion, or RM IV). Step sequencing made perfectly. I can compose all drum, bass, & percussion parts EXACTLY the way I want them. :D

2) The open format makes it possible to use other soft instruments via VST, DX, & Rewire. :D

3)Arranging song patterns are easy (in most cases, my tracks are finish long before I ever export the wav files to Project5 or Sonar3.

To sum it all up concerning soft studios, FL Studio is the better option for myself than Reason. And the people who bash or hate this great software for the wrong reasons are being complete idiots, they don't know what the hell they're talking about, & they swear to God's planet earth that Reason & Logic (PC version 5.5) are the better deals. :x

What a freaking joke.

oh ya...BTW...

I read a thread here on KVR where an FL user mentions some playlist shortcuts but Ive been searchin around here for 30 minutes with no luck.

Basically what I want to do is stop having to press "e" and "p" for choosing select or paint. Im pretty sure he mentioned something about staying in draw mode but press this key to temporarily go into select mode WHILE the key is pressed. Whats the magic key?

Ghost channels in the piano roll give you that

Can someone explain me this loop-recording ur all shouting for?

interesting - how does that work?

I have loved Fruity since first getting it at version 3.0. It served as my intro to the world of computer music making and still is the first host I got to for midi comping and arranging. I still use Fruity to start projects even after adopting Sonar as well as Adobe Audition (now at vs 1.5!) and Abelton Live which I use for live recording (I still can't get good audio recording results with FruityLoops Studio :help: ) I also have Tracktion, but the Fruit still rules for the easy, familiar in midi manipulation and automation. First love for ever!

Cheers,
Gordon

a record mode where a section plays over and over (ie looped) while you play in extra notes. this way you can add to parts of the tracks a little bit at a time while they play

this is a fundamental feature in almost all sequencers (even back on atari) - but not fruity

Fruity is at the moment the most 'workable' software for me, although I have to say that the sound quality keeps me trying out other programs. I dont understand why the same drumloop sounds much better in almost any other host than fruity, its like something is always missing and i have to use more compressors etc to make the sound 'boom' or 'kick'.

What's missing is 22% in the volume. Volume of sampler track is lowered to 78% by default.

The common problem then, it's so easy to throw effects in FL that many people - beginning by me  -use comps or whatever to raise the volume to what they're "used to" (may it be in winamp). Add to that it's not evident to know there's 6 virtual dBs (i mean the 32 bit wider dynamic range) you can use in FL that you don't always handle correctly at start...

Then you compare a loop a 100% vol in "app X" (say winamp) and a loop out of FL, at the same volume but compressed and then clipped because it's recorded/rendered with the 6add dB that won't go out the soft...

One can argue of the very similarity in all hosts outputs, but if you hear a clear difference you first should clean the sounds of all effects and normalize the mixdowns before comparing.

If you do all that, you can find that checking mix and output differences between the apps is certainly a cool astrophysic question, but not related to making music.

Maybe because you forgot to turn up the volume channel of your kick drum first.

By the way, with hardware (MPC 2000) or software (FL Studio or Battery), you need compression to beef up your kicks anyway (especially in hip-hop). The only kicks samples that don't need compression are the one that were processed already on the sample CD's.

thanx for the response guys.. :)
I actually mean a prefab sampled loop (wav) that sounds better in other hosts than in fruity. Same goes for my own sampled basslicks. They just seem to groove more and have more dynamics, even sound more inspiring sometimes. I have a feeling that when I load the loop in battery in fruity it sounds better but that might just be very subjective. :?:
Is there a difference in samplingtechnique between battery/other hosts and the fruitysampler?

....or am i just hearing things?!

IMHO the best thing about fruity is I'm one of the wise and lucky ones to have it in my arsenal of recording tools....if people don't like it that's their tough luck... :D
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.
