All me shortcuts, taskbar icons etc. All gone.
What a f**king POS this is.
how do you even manage to do that? what were you doing?! i've changed three hard drives over the course of one Win7 install, i've never had any problems restoring settings, let alone losing them during normal operation...

not really. turn off indexing and it'll work like regular search. search with indexing is way faster though.
I don't know what to write here that won't be censored, as I can only speak in profanity.

No idea.
Turned it on and got the message "failed to load profile" and that was it. All gone.
Now they're still gone but no message anymore.

That said, have just restored them manually.

backup is your friend :-) i've long since set up a weekly OS/Profile backup and with separate projects folder backup (all on network drive) - never been happier :-)

Yeah, but OOTB the search is horribly broken. I installed this instead: http://www.voidtools.com/

Instant search results and no configuration required to actually find stuff.

Hmm, back when this was first posted I didn't have much in the way of Windows 7 on machines that I use, but now I use Windows 7 and 8 at home and W7 at work. Pretty happy with W7 all round really.

After all these years, people still have to press "Start" button to "shut down" the computer...

Awesome. I could not remember the name of this utility after someone posted about it a couple of years ago.

Thanks!!

Peace,
Andy.

Why would you ever want to shut down your computer?

No, not really. There are keyboards with a power-off button which one can simply press to turn off the computer. Also, one can just press the power switch on the case, and it goes into shutdown. Of course, you can adjust this so that it doesn't shutdown, but rather sleep or hibernate...

I've got power-off button mounted in the wall, as my computer case is in another room. It was not a practical remark. There is some twisted evil irony in hiding "off" switch behind a "start" label. My impression is that Windows upgrades consist solely of moving buttons around, but not this one.
