The matrix unit in reason is basically a very flexible arpreggiator.

no?
The man's got a point, or are both myself and the laser guided one missing the point? :?
That's a step sequencer innit? Not an arpeggiator.

I don't think you are ;)

I don't see what the VST fuss is about. Reason has great rewire support, why would Propellerheads mess up their software by exposing it to a bunch of badly written plugs?

I can see it happening already

That is spot on. This is exactly what would happen, and exactly why the props aren't going to open up their beautifully stable system to the filthy influence of outside code. It would be a gargantuan mistake.

And i don't say gargantuan lightly. Because its hard to spell

There isn't a sound that I need, that I can't get out of Reason... and It's the only app I've used on either platform that runs reliably to the point that I don't become more frustrated with the software, than the process of making the music I'm working on... I have a lot of DAW software, (both platforms) but Reason stands alone as the single most elegant, well written piece of software I have ever used! And that includes all my work design software, Mac and PC! With Reason, I don't think about what isn't in the program, I just use what IS! ...If you compose music looking for various sounds and rythms to fit together, I don''t see how a particular VST or AU instrument would even matter? When I find the sound for a certain space in a song, I don't care whether it comes from a sample or an instrument! If it fits... A program that works properly (with less features) will always be my choice over one that functions poorly or unreliably...

"Logic has to quit now, would you like to try and save your song"...

I use reason within DP. I started out just using reason to mess around with dr rex. Now it seams like I get 50 to 50% of my sounds from it.

The rewire sync is great. Its almost as good as MMC but it doesnt require a midi box, and its automated with the opening of reason. I couldnt say enough about how much I like the program and how stable it is. It uses very little cpu use and it never crashes.

Who ever said that rewire wasnt stable should spend some more time with the machine or re-evaluate the other apps there re-wiring. If that doesnt work out then try go ahead and set your self up with MMC. I'm not sure reason has it but I use it in DP all the time to lock to Pro-Tools. I imagine Reason has it

Hmm, and the lines between a step sequencer and an arp blur somewhere, I'm just not sure where.

Technically, classically speaking, an arp would arp out just the notes in a chord...

but we use arps for all sorts of other things.

Consider the arp in z3ta. It's fed by a midi sequence containing whatever notes you want. So in a classical definition, it's a step sequencer, not an arp.

But we use it as an arp, because it'll transpose the pattern around the root note we hit.

Reason's matrix works like this, except we don't define the root note by pressing a key, instead we select the pattern from its memory with a key.

Still, I maintain that within the context of Reason, it acts more as an arp than a step-sequencer. Reason already has a step-sequencer that is surely not confusable with an arpeggiator.

cheers, fun thread 8)

You guys are right, the Props'll never add VST support. I think what they're taking so long doing is building something designed to settle the issue. A doomsday machine. This of course can't be done with any finality but my guess is that Reason 3 will debut to mass adulation and be a very convenient one-stop-shop with enhancements to all areas and devices, especially Redrum and Matrix, more mind-boggling routing options, and one killer synth as a cherry on top. "Sure you could mess around with VST's, but why bother? It's all right here".
I get annoyed by the GUI, not so much the specific hardware emulation (although the cables drive me nuts!)as the fussiness and the loss of screen space making everything TINY but if you're working with something a long time there's a lot to be said for a color scheme that's not full of surprises. I spent quite a while last night making ERA look right in Tracktion: kind of had to...

Propellerheads is a business. They'll do what the market demands.
If their marketing twonks tell them they're losing money by not supporting open plugs they'll support them. Same for audio in and midi out etc...
Oh and if you're worried about stability don't use the facility when they add it. I'm sure a bunch of non-functioning hooks won't compromise Reasons absolute stability.

Is there such a thing as a friendly wager? I hope so. Anyway, I betcha they bend over backwards to avoid VST support. They're whirling Swedish socialist perfectionists! They don't want everybody's chrome fins and fuzzy dice all over their Volvo!
