Hi guys,

Been listening and admiring the great productions of William Orbit and one thing is bugging me: I really cannot define the synth bleeps in this tune that define the rhythm. It sounds like a synth...but what was done :0
Any experienced guys out here who have an idea how to do that? Maybe it is easy and I just don't know it :)

Hi Jesse.

Old thread... I know. But I have tried to emulate the sound in question.

I think I know what "synth bleeps" you are refering to in Pure Shores. It's the delayed synth sound heard in the intro right? Amazing track by the way. The sound is a very characteristic William Orbit signature in his productions from the mid 90's. It's a synth (I have seen suggestions on the sound as being a guitar) and since William Orbit used a Juno-106 a lot in his productions back then, it's most likely a Juno-106.

The same Orbit signature can also be heard across the Ray of Light album he produced for Madonna on tracks like Frozen, Skin and The Power of Good-Bye etc. that album is my absolute favourite from her by the way. As a sidenote, Pure Shores is the same chord progression as Substitute for Love on the same Madonna album.

The sound is included as a preset in Luftrum 9, my soundbank for DIVA. For the preset I used a Dual VCO with oscillator sync, some cross modulation, a 24db LP filter with high res and some keyfollow. I guess most characteristic about the sound, is the heavy synced delay. The preset is called 'The Procyon Beach' and is included in Luftrum 9:

Hi,

I forgot I asked :D

So, how can I obtain the preset? :)

Thanks for telling me though, maybe I can try to recreate it too

The preset above is included in the Luftrum 9 soundbank I did for DIVA by U-He. The preset is titled 'The Procyon Beach'.

Sounds very nice!
Pure shores was one of my favs back in the day and I didn't know that it was produced by Orbit ...now it makes sense. And it obviously sounds close to Madonna's Album, which also is one of my favs from her.

Thanks! Yes, it's an amazing album, Ray of Light. Mr. Orbit was peaking in the mid-90's just as Pink Floyd was in '71 when recording the Live at Pompeii concert (no comparison though!).

Any chance that this preset is also available for Reason?

Hi AAleks86 and welcome to KVR! Sorry no, I recreated the preset mainly for the Diva soundset. :)

Seriously? You want to get this "preset"?

This sound is so simple, anyone could do it with any number of free synths out there.

There is almost nothing to it.

Is the art of synthesis that far forgotten? Have we become unimaginative, and lost so much creativity that we need a "preset" for the simplest sounds?

Creating a sound which sounds alike is easy, creating a sound which sounds exactly the same is difficult and a lot of work. If you're convinced you can do something which sounds exactly the same, using a free synth, feel free to post some sound examples. :P

Oh come now.

Are you telling me you couldn't replicate the example above? You'd need a preset to do it?

Wait a second.

My point is not "Can you or I replicate the sound in the example".

My point is, considering the incredible amount of available choices, paid or freeware, in this day and age, that anyone would feel so threatened by not being able to come up with that exact sound, that they would discontinue working or composing, until they could find just such a "preset".

Really?

Man, I guess I am just happy to have grown up in the era when a hardware synth was available to learn how to synthesize sounds.

It's not about the tool.

It's about the creativity of the user of the tool.

When did the OP say that? :o

We all have different goals with synthesizers, some like to delve deeper into the synth itself others like to browse presets for suitable sounds to use in compositions - two equal but different approaches to sound.

Many composers I know don't care about synthesis but they do compose music much better than I would ever be capeable of. I am not a composer but I can craft the sounds instead. See the synergy? Using presets are a good thing.

When that is said, it is fun to do synth emulations! People like synth emulations like the famous Bladerunner lead, the detuned Boards of Canada signature pad or the Save a Prayer intro another poster had been trying to nail for a long time.

I always tend to include at least some emulations in my soundsets and in the Diva soundset are emulations by Vangelis, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream (Rubycon seq bass), William Orbit, Michael Jackson etc.

My point is: We are all different. We all have different approach to sound and music. We got different ears and perception. Don't blame someone for asking for a certain preset or emulation.

Just my 2 cents... :)
