Most likely this is down to the output convertors, which on the real hardware aren't nearly as good as most of the convertors in audio interfaces we are all using nowadays - making the output of the keyboard a little more "chunky" and lofi, less top end and a bit more of a defocused quality - so if you want the software to get there, add a little extra processing, maybe a little high end roll off, and a touch of very subtle compression and distortion through whatever flavour-fiers you prefer, in conjunction with the various simulated "old" flavour features in FM8 itself.Kees49 wrote:I think FM8 sounds a bit thin compared to a DX7II. checkout imageline sytrus , it goes far beyond what a dx7II could do and reads
sysex banks , as far as the hardware dx line goes , the older dx'es mostly sounded more interesting (7, dx100 ,dx5) due to the 14 bit output wich gave them
more growl , the later ones were a bit to clean sounding but had more waves besides sinewave based operators

By the way, what does the 7 actually mean?
DX7 is a 16 bit 6 operator FM synth, it got 6 LFO settings, it can hold 32 patches, ships with 61 keys

Nori did an awsome soundbank for the FM8, also on our site ( and did some presets for the Yamaha Hw units, as I did some )
Well, I still have a Dx7IID, a TX802 and a TG77 ( Xpander of the SY ), and the closest in the sound, atm, and ime, is certainly NI FM8. Not only does it have the exact same parameters set, but the import will also get you the closest to the Original Dx patches. Sytrus is pretty capable as well, and can import sysex, as Rhino, but you'll find out soon that the imported patches have few to do with the original patches.
Then the FM8 gives MORE than the original machines, wich I tried to exploit to make the Gloss Spells soundset. Much MORE. A real pleasure to program for all those who enjoy FM synthesis.
It doesnt mean that different DX7 HW series, and FM8 will sound strictly identical, as, as many people reported in this thread, at least the DACs were different. Not only the DACs ime, but the whole output circuitry ( I had some FM7 modules that are famous for their busty sound, at the price of the worst S/N ratio I've ever heard in an HW synth, when the TX816 modules were much less noisy, but identical structure wise )
All I can say. There are a lot of cool FM synths, like RP Blue, or Toxic. But to get near the original DX sound .... possible choices narrow a lot.
