Best free VST instruments for dubstep?

One of the free gems I've run across here was 'Scroo' a nice little formant synth well worth the download.
What about waiting for Firebird when it goes free?

And I picked up V-Station and Bass Station a few years back on ebay for real cheap. (And yes, they've allowed me free upgrades the whole time.)

I'm beginning to think it's impossible to make music this beautiful with only freeware.

Even if I did have the software, I don't know if I have the talent. This is the most beautiful music I've heard in my life. The music I've made and the music I've collected can't stand up to this stuff. I'm fully aware that this is my opinion, as my family is quick to remind me

Just for clarification, I am not per se recommending V-Station or Discovery, I was looking for presets in that section (Dubstep) and asked if someone knows if Dogs on Acid went wild there.

Take a dive on Youtube, watch the videos by BoyInABand. This fine british bloke uses Reason for creating Electronic music (DnB and DubStep). And we all know how Reason (prior the new Rack modules) is a tad... limited to what's bundled.

I'd like to get to the level in the pro video I posted 3 posts up. I know some of the stuff is a remix and already has a bed to jump on. I can do the pop background. What I can't do are those screaming pulsating vibrating mind shaking sounds. I'm not talking about the wub wobble talking bass.

BTW, I'd never seen reason before. It takes me way back

WHile the video tutorial was great, I think it's actually not what you're looking for then. And I can understand that. There is just more agressive material out there.

That's actually a mix of (IMO) Dubstep and Complextro.

I think I can't help much then other than saying "watch tutorials".

I'm kind of in the same boat currently. And it seems like, if you have the right synth (like: NI Massive especially, U-HE Zebra) and the right FX like Distortion, Modulation, etc (take a look at the bread and butter stuff by MeldaProduction), you clearly get where you aim at faster, since there are so many tutorials (just take a dive on Dave's/BoyInABand page itself, or look for "Massive Dubstep Tutorial" on YouTube - plenty of content), free presets and what not.


Then again, if you have a synth as capable as MASSIVE with the modulation (and OSC's), you can get close. But it's also more work (and I'm just not skilled enough on that end, I have to admit that). So yes, I think money needs to be inolved. That, and massive processing and compressing sh*t to it's limits.

The newest version of Synth1 is actually pretty capable of some nice dubstep basses with practice. Set the pitches of the oscillators wide apart, use one of the built-in distortions, plus the FM knob, for some firey, metallic wobbles, etc.

Man, the 1st reply to the thread is correct. I'm so used to the Synth1 hype not living up to the sound that I just didn't bother trying until now. 1st, very well done. 2nd. I had no idea Synth1 was capable of this.

Dubstep has also made me realize that there is more to FM synthesis than what I'd thought.

It's a great synth for almost anything. Lots of assignable modulation sources and plenty of filter models.

I also like: Tone2 Firebird (it can do growl basses), Atlantis (closest thing to a free version of Massive), Xenobioz Kruudster and Lectro, Kiaratune (great quality!), ymVST (for bleepy stuff), TAL Noisemaker (gritty analog bass), TAL Elek7ro (also very gritty)

Thanks for listening. This certainly makes my want for Komplete less. I don't think the computer I use could handle the sample sets. Komplete was an idea for after I upgrade my computer. That might be postponed longer, as I've read that it's difficult to get Win7 installed on new Win8 computers. I miss XP.

Thank you. Xenos posted his Synth1 dubstep presets in the 2nd post. I used 2 bass presets. I also used Synthmaster CM and Dune Cm. I programmed them by following the tutorials posted above. I used Classic EQ and You Wa Shock on every track. I used PhaseBug to separate out the leads. On the master, it's just JB Broadcast set on "High pressure". That's all I used for external effects.
