However, how many people are working on 233-300 mhz computers these days? especially when we have 3000+ mhz rated systems...
i teach reason at the university college of bergen.
so i teach reason to students who will become music teachers.
the idea is that reason is something they can actually use with the stone age computers they are likely to find when they find jobs later.
probably a small market, but an important one :)

I have brought this exact same idea up several times here at kvr.. so maybe you read my idea and picked it up subconciously :)

I also even mailed my idea to the props directly in their suggestions thingy.. about a year ago.

so uhh.. nice idea I agree with you :P
That would be a HOT idea & a very elegant solution to the VSTi 'problem'.

Personally, I really hope they don't bend & make VSTi's available within Reason. Every time I get inside the program, I know my options are vastly truncated by comparison to VST & feel kinda forced to make due with the tools at hand, which is a good thing, as I don't naturaly take to deep manipulation in any given synth, especially when I know I can load 1,001 others & have a different sound with zero effort. Convieniant, but intellectually stifling.

Maybe a much more stringent SDK code for modules within Reason would challenge & raise the bar for developers, & no, that's not meant as any kind of insult to the current VST universe, but we've had many thread discussions regarding GUI's & patch management, etc & this would be a perfect opportunity for PropellerHeads to step up to the plate & offer something truly outstanding. I'm thinking along the lines of a global patch management intergration in all the 3rd party modules that would be created. That would be a very welcome change. Will they do it? Probably not :( But it's no harm in wishing I guess.

Maybe the could just make a Redrum VSTI, it works so great with loading the samples and it's built in step sequencer, when using any other drumsynth/samples except for Micro tonic you would have to switch between the instrument and edit screen which doesn't show on which key which sound is triggered.
This often makes me lazy and don't want to bother making complex drumtracks within Cubase, because loading samples and get the right one(s) you're looking for takes hours and hours.

wow is school funding really THAT bad over there?

I have a 380mhz case/mobo/cpu/ps that I was trying to give away and couldnt.. since it was too slow..

well.. maybe they could implement a classic 'switch' in the options.. for you slow ppl :P

why don't you change your screen's resolution then?
Takes a second with any kind of desktop manager

any kind of software needs some customisation to make you feel comfortable with it

This is probably the best compromise that can be made re: Reason and VST(i). I would love to use Scream and RV7000 on my VSTi's, as well as the synths without having to mess with rewire.

school funding depends on what level (age) and the economy of the kommune (like a county) the schools are in... i guess that is similar to the situation in most countries.
but you have to agree that even an old computer with reason is a good supplement to the "music teacher" bringing out a box with plastic recorders and triangles  so for teachers who find themselves at a school with limited resources it is good for them to have knowledge of things like... for example that reason is a program that can run decently on older ccomputers.

now wheres me plaggy guiro...

I know theres a trance tune in it just waiting to get out.

Although the V-tec hasnt been tracking properly of late.
Its never too late to have a happy childhood!

It's funny that you mentioned the "box with triangles," I actually still remember that from school! Ha Ha! (too old obviously)... But, you make a good point... imagine the difference for a child to be exposed to software like Reason early on, when compared to the alternative "box of triangles and shakers..." WOW! I'd say in the next millenium, there will be no worries about the future of musical development in society! Cool!

Post

I guess this is going a bit off topic.. (and im starting to post like squids :o)

but (:hihi:) you were exposed to triangles and the like and still made it here to the land of VSTi and Synthesizers..

In elementary school I cant ever remember triangles or the like.. our music teacher would take out the old record player and play us music.. some classical stuff and some singalong stuff.. then she taught us stuff like EGBDF (Every Good Boy Does Fine) and bass and treble staffs etc.. :D

in high school.. musical class consisted of similar stuff (minus the singalongs :P) but just in greater detail.. pitch tone timbre and "tell me what note this is on the sheet music" and they broke out the digi piano and let us noodle around on that.. we also watched movies like amadeus

all in all it was a pretty enjoyable experience for me.. my sympathy to you kvrians that had to be subjected to triangles and cowbells.. :o

but anyways... the computer technology here has really taken off.. I believe my former high school has taken away the old windows PC and installed G4's in most of the rooms.. they probably have G5's now..

I remember manyyy years ago when I was there we had a P2 (that or a P1) hooked on a desk with a 27" tv that was linked to the pc in every single classroom.. this in a rural school too..

elementary school... hmm not too many computers then, but that was back in the day of 286 and maybe 386.. the computer boom hadnt really taken off yet.. but I do remember fixing one in my engish class though so I know we had at least a few in some of the classrooms..

basically what im getting at is.. I thought most schools had better equipment than you're telling me (from first hand) that they do.. :o

especially when manufacturers like dell are selling 2.4 GHZ Celeron systems for $400.. it shouldnt be too much of a budget crunch to get a handful and make a small lab..

Some side-chain compressor and other side-chain fx would be nice. Or can i make a side-chain compressor with a little patching? If so: how?!(Why am i so lazy...)

Post

That's exactly what I was thinking of this morning, a sidechain compressor with key input.
More, many more effects are needed to stay creative and not to get bored.
How come there aren't any big sample libraries/refills for Reason?
Nowadays every new released sample library contains atleast 3 gig or more.

Rabid wrote:If they get rid of the toyish look, the cables, and add VSTi support they may be able to finally sell a few copies. Everyone knows that with that hardware rack look and no VSTi support Reason is nothing but a rack of crap. :)

Very true...

I can't believe people are still defending its lack of VST support by saying it would make it less 'stable'. I haven't noticed Renoise crashing because of VST support...

ford442 wrote:as i see it - the Props value the ability for people to be able to actually download and play the reason/rebirth songs with their home (non-studio) setup - slow cpu/low speed internet - etc..
VSTi's would make that entirely impossible..
Why not just not use VSTs if you wish to share your Reason songs with every other owner? And in case you didn't know, there are loads of free VSTs...
So you could just use those and everybody would be able to play your songs...
Or - guess what! Some OTHER people might actually have some of the commercial VSTs that you have!

along the same line of thinking - wouldnt Reason make the most CPU hungry VSTi ever? it would make people lose interest if they or their collaborating artists were unable to use it alongside their other valued VSTi's....
Huh?
Reason will continue to lose market share as hopefully the 'hype machine' will die down as people see all the far more powerful alternatives (i.e. they offer VST support.)
