Where did you read that?

I'm guessing there will be some purist labels that only accept tracks created with authentic acid hardware synths and sequencers, but I wouldn't say it's a rule for all labels that put out acid music.

Ah yeah, I remember that thread. I think he's talking about the purist acid labels, not all record labels that might release acid music.

But if it's something you're worried about, just get a pre-built x0xb0x from one of the known good builders. The purists purist labels might even reject that, but there will always be people who demand tracks recorded through an analogue desk, using analogue hardware and released only on vinyl.

Which is pretty cool I guess, but it kinda limits the audience for your music

oh ok. i was a bit confused by that statement myself. i mean sure that would apply 10 years ago when vsti were in there infancy but with today's 'arguably' realistic sounding vst/au/rack extension units its not nearly as strong an argument over using those vs using a real tb303 and sequencer. sure, the tb303 with sequencer will sound more authentic (does it matter if i use a pianoroll vs writing notes in the sequencer/matrix? is one better then the other? tips?) but a music listener wont care how its created if its a good song?

I think the trick is finding the labels that aren't so strict about their acid sounds. Shouldn't be too difficult!

FWIW, there is an Australia collective of musicians named Clan Analogue:

As I recall, their requirement was simply that at least 1 piece of analogue hardware was used for the recording, but otherwise anything goes. Posting an an example of a label that has a specific requirement, rather than a general rule for all labels. Definitely worth checking out their music though, some great sounds.

And how exactly are most labels going to have any idea what equipment or s/w you used to make the track? All I ever did in the past was to send in masters to my label - how I made it, where I made it they didn't care less. You think labels are going to come and vet your studio? Tip - they're not.

Fwiw: I have a couple of TB-303s but typically prefer to use ABL2 instead (as VST/AU, I don't use Reason, but it's the exact same audio engine - which btw can also be found in the "technoBox2" app for iOS for only a handful of bucks). Recommended! Also check out Antto's (free!) VB-303, if you're on Windows anyway.
