Hm... I don't remember the RE-20 using any NR modes, but you could change the sound with different used tapes (chrome, no chrome, etc). It might be worth a try to mess with the hiss/asperity settings if I get my hands on it.

Guys, Urs is wandering around here in the office, real close to drop his pants in a mood. But since we haven't had lunch yet I'd suggest to wait a bit with the my-plugin-beats-your-plugin cock comparison, and perhaps a bit longer until Monday.

Just thinkin' how difficult that kind of a tweaking might be? I mean trying to set those parameters to match some famous tape? I have no experience of tapes - if you don't count 4-track Fostex multitrack recorders back in the early '90sCompyfox wrote:Now from what I got from the manual of SATIN, you can have pretty much EVERY tape machine you want. Granted, you are limited to two types of tape (the two most favourite ones: more modern tapes, and earlier brands which are more gritty if driven too hard). But... this all is being compensated by the huge possibilities of the "Service" panel.
I just want to insert a plugin and start recording/mixing. Not much into that delay/flanger stuff, even I know it's a nice little extra.
Hmmm... Satin might be something that makes me want to learn more and maybe dig deeper into that whole tape emulation scene. With VTM I'll get great results immediately, am I right? No intense tweaking required?
Optimal number of audio plugins is one more than you currently have.

Satin also comes with presets, so you can get great results after you check them out and see what works best with your material.

I'm sure, Satin comes with tons of presets to get you started. Then leave the Service Panel alone, and start messing with Input/Output, Tape Speed and the Tape Type.
Customizing is just a great bonus. I mean... use a starting preset, then take a look at the frequency plot... too much lowend, compensate. Too less highend, compensate. Want a more "lofi" system, mess with the settings.
I wish more plugins like that would have a frequency analysis built into to see what's going on while tweaking internal settings.
VTM is nothing different IMO - usability wise. Only that I probably needed less time to actually "listen" and "analyse" the features of VTM compared to what a monster Satin will be (feature wise).

Satin comes with a bunch of classic tape machine presets, just select one of them.
You could even select your favorite tape setting (or tweak your own dream tape), save it as "Default.h2p" and it will load up automatically each time you insert Satin.
Cheers

I think the 'buddy' who said it's not 'completely authentic' completely misses the point of Satin. I played around with it yesterday (thanks for the superquick download links, Urs!), and I actually spent hours just experimenting with the different modes and options. Flanger and delay are very special, and you can make the tape as dirty as you want, or just add that tiny bit of glue to your music - it's up to you.
It's a tape toolkit, rather than the exact emulation of *one* type of tape machine. Still, it sounds 'authentic' in the sense that the end results are stunning close to the sound you would expect from tape or some vintage gear. And you can dial in different settings very easily - the preset system is as simple as it gets.
Btw, I have Slate VTM as well, and it's also a high quality plug in. In contrast to Satin, it emulates two specific machines (and does that very well), while Satin emulates the principles of tape.
Both can be used to glue things together, make it sound more analogue and warm, and both are excellent in doing so. Satin is more versatile, while Slate VTM is a very precise emulation. If you can afford it, get both...
However, neither Slate VTM nor Satin will do instant magic (nor a real tape machine). It's not just "put the thing on that channel and then you'll have an analogue sounding hit song". You need to find out how hot you'll drive the plug in/tape machine to get a specific sound, and how to set the parameters - and that's not done by presets alone, but also with the ears...

It's not about booth sizes, it's about the coffee - and how you spike it. At the end of the day, we got served with 100% spike, 0% coffee. Not even major brand names such as Moog, Roland, or Korg came close to be considered serious competition.Urs wrote:But... but... our booth was definitely bigger at Musikmesse.

So many good advices! Thanks guys!
Yeah, I'm just an old guitar twanging goofy geezer with only little experience of this whole overwhelming plugin scene and it's so nice to get a lot of useful information from you guys!
And even developers (Urs and Steven) replying and answering questions!

Actually I quite like Magnetic II as well (I upgraded from V1 one). I liked it on synth bass.
But I'd have to say that Satin and VTM are quite a bit better to my humble ears anyway. And Satin is only $89 at the moment (ex VAT) you can't really go wrong!
