Ok. Yeah, I think I had two instances of Satin running.

No damage. My ears were protected by Ice9. :)
Optimal number of audio plugins is one more than you currently have.

It's called MakeUp here, works for the input.

I'm testing/tweaking it on Sonar X1d.
I was in touch with Urs about this, and most of the crashes currently resolve around VST3 and (again) Wavelab. Sonar uses VST2, so you should be fine for the time being.

This is a bit confusing, but the button for this is called "Makeup". This links the input with the ouput knob. Turn up the input and the output is being compensated and the other way around. A good thing is that you can still use the output knob to boost/trim (finetune) the signal just in case.

I sent in an FR to maybe add some small additional labels or alternate labeling just in case for questions like these. But it's actually written in detail in the manual.

Oh, don't thank me, thank EvilDragon (and Urs/u-he, obviously). :)

And what comes to Satin... I'm convinced. I'll buy it! :D

P.S. Steven, if you're reading this thread: I'm still interested of VTM, but 'cos I don't have iLok, I can't demo it. Maybe demo version that doesn't require iLok? :)

Well...i tried Satin demo..

As a previous owner of Slate VTM, extensively tested UAD Ampex (amazing), UAD Studer (not that good, slate is much better at Studer tone), ToneBooster ReelBus (no brainer) and after testing every other Tape plugin on Win VST platfrom (yes every) all i can say is:

:-o :o

You guys are gonna like it...You guys are fa**** gonna like it..(and this impression is only from a brief test)

Post

How is it compared to UAD Ampex?

Demo limitations are a bit annoying, I lost my interest after some minutes for Satin and uninstalled it. Hopefully the demo for the release will have some more user friendly demo limitations. I don't speak about a 30 day trial but give us at least 7 days or implement a muting instead of this annoying crackling.

I think it was mentioned a few pages ago (or in another thread?) the crackles should be less frequent if each instance isn't emitting.

Swoon as I do over this, I'm waiting for the official release (last minute bux fixes are not necessarily the most insignificant).

A few GS members report vastly lower figures, even with i5. I can also report that it's quite CPU efficient (1.5% on i5-2380P with Reaper 4.51).

I have stopped thinking inside the box with Satin.
It's basically a tape emu, yes. Fine.
But it can be raped into being so much more if you mis-use it right.

The goodies hiding behind the Service Panel (anyone remember AM|Track? 8) ) let you use it as an EQ, a saturator, dynamics tool, transient shaper... And that is just in Studio mode, completely ignoring the Flanger and Delay modes.

I don't see it comparing 1:1 to anything else available, so I'm not getting into this better/worse argument.

I'm currently creating a line of presets for the combination of Superior Drummer 2's Metal Foundry default kit with Satin. Just for fun.

How it's meant to work: group all the microphone types inside SD2, so all Kick mics go to one output, all Snare mics go to another etc. (you get it..), which leaves you with 5 Stereo outputs going to your host: Kick, Snare, Toms, Overhead (incl. HH) and Room.
Add to that a folder track to submix them all.
Insert 6 instances of Satin, one on each single track and one on the bus, then load the presets.

Take this little drum part as a "dry reference", just some arranged Jarzombek MIDI loops through SD2 MF default, no SD2 internal FX, no host FX, no nicerizers, nothing.

All of the examples below use the identical (!!!) SD2 outputs and grouping as the one above. Nothing but 6 instances of Satin used! No other EQs, no other dynamics tools, not even a Limiter on the master.
("Work in progress", so...)

This could be a balanced modern metal kit, using all sorts of Compander and EQ combinations.

This next one is extremely dry and clean, I think that worked by combining the A-Type or A-Type modded encoder with the UHX decoders.

Now, I really love this one. It's probably totally useless, but it just goes to show how sick you can go with Satin. Remember those first band recordings in your garage or band rehearsal room? <3

And here's one using some of my other "systematically uncategorized" presets.
https://soundcloud.com/chokehold/u-he-s ... ts-various

All coming from the same source material and 6 instances of Satin, altogether using something between 1% to 3% of my Mac Mini's 2-core i5.

Think of Satin as a tape plugin if you must... but don't think of it as a tape plugin.
