Google Ad Words & Ad Choice

We've just launched a new sample library biz and we're looking into advertising options. I often see the same banner ads pop up when I'm web-serfing around the place. You see them here all the time, to the right of this post somewhere with the little 'Ad Choices' logo in the top right corner. When I click the 'Ad Choices logo' it takes me to some info about 'Google Ads' and how to switch it on or off.

I know how to get on to Ad Words so our name pops up in searches but does anyone know how or where I can sign up to get my companys' banner into these targeted banner ads?

Do we have to go to a dedicated marketing company or is it something we can do ourselves? If so, how? Just haven't been able to figure it out yet.

Anyone have any experience or knowledge with this stuff?
