Hi, everybody.

I need help related to some beginner questions.

I use Cubase 5, and I have some midi files which I must route them through Virtual instruments. I did this first:

1) I imported one of my midi files

2) I added for every midi channel his own instruments track (over 10 different instruments). It serves me good, but it is unnecessary already 10 loaded HalionOne Vsti with every different presets for every instruments!!! It is totaly unprofessional, I think.

I get what I want with the sound presets, but I want to try make it with a little different approach. I read some articles about Multiple output of the same virtual instrument (multi-timbral instruments). But I am stuck, and I need some advices which surely helping me to overcome this problems.

First of all, this time I wouldn't use HalionOne (it serves only for test purpose), and I want to use vst plug-in Kontakt 5, but I didn't success to import this plug-in into Cubase.

In the main menu, I went to Devices -> Plug-In Information, and I tried to find path to my Kontakt instrument somewhere on my hard drive, but again I didn't load it in VST rack in Cubase. What I do wrong in this proccess? Any advice?

Second question is, can someone explain me, how to use Kontakt as multi-timbral instrument (or any other if it possible) and to put only one virtual instrument track which every instrument will be load with different preset and with the different number of channels? (Drum is ch: 10, bass is ch:2) etc.

For example I have 10 midi channels, I made new instrument track in which I loaded HalionOne, and I want to use only HalionOne (or Kontakt 5) for all my instruments, but with different presets for every instruments. How I can do that?

Third question is how I can record new sound from virtual instrument to audio track? Can someone explain me simple steps for this?

I will appreciate any help, useful links...

Thank you very much!!!

You can turn that off in the program preferences.

Did you even try to load it in the RACK (F11)?

If it's not listed in the plugin information, it might have been put on the Blacklist.xml - look for that in your used Windows profile. Or Mac profile or whatever.

(man! Where is my crystal ball?!)

If it's in the plugin Information list, you need to load it through the rack (F11). Depending on your VSTi ammount, it should be easy to find (no subfolders, named simply "Kontakt <nr>".

Instrument Channels in Cubase are not really great for this purpose. Going the MIDI channel route is the right way to go.

To create a "multi-mode" VSTi, like Kontakt and Halion, you need to first setup your MIDI channels accordingly (Set the MIDI Channel Nr in the Inspector for each MIDI Channel in the Arranger). And you also need to set the MIDI channel in the used VSTi.

For Kontakt it's the MIDI Logo going from A1 to A16, for HalionOne doesn't have that, HalionSonicSE can be properly setup.

If you don't have a VSTi that is capable of utilizing more than one MIDI channel, then you simply can't pull of what you try to pull off. And that's usually the case with like 99% of the available synths on the market. Romplers and certain Drum Machines are a different issue.

@Compyfox

Thank you for your efforts.

I solve problem with Kontakt. I can see it now in the Vst rack. I didn't properly copy some of .dll files to the vst plugins folder of Cubase.

Now it is remain part with multi-mode and channels number in the midi. I didn't understand well how to do that.

1) I imported my midi file. When I imported my midi, I get 10 midi tracks auomaticaly with every midi track of my song .

2) In Vst rack I loaded Kontakt 5. (This time I skipped any adding of instruments track)

3) You mention arranger in the inspector menu. Can you explain it to me better.

I can't see channel number in the Inspector. Check this out:

4) Here is the window of my Kontakt 5 with 2 added instruments (Akkord guitar and electric guitar), just for test:

First instrument has Midi ch:1 and second has Midi ch:2

How to go further?

Thank you again!

Kontakt is setup like you want it to.

The Channel number "should" show as soon as you click beside the yellow lit "keyboard" image from your first screenshot. With this, you can declare which MIDI channel it will use.

But taking a closer look at the screenshot, your MIDI files were automatically routed to Instrument channels, and therefore using one HalionONE per Instrument Channel. You can't setup MIDI channels with Cubase Instrument Channels.

Create 10 MIDI channels, move the imported MIDI tracks to the corresponding position and you're fine.

MIDI Channels look like three horizontal bars that are slightly shifted (as track icon), Instrument Channels use a "keyboard" icon.

Furthermore - go in to Cubase 5's program settings, in the MIDI section should be something to turn off "create MID/Instrument channel for imported/new MIDI track" or something.

This should clear all your problems. If in doubt, hit the manual.

@Compyfox

I make it! :) You were right.

I turn off this settings for importing midi file and I get idea where I did wrong.

I have trouble now, how to make some sound with Kontakt 5.

I have only imported midi tracks now, and I didn't make instrument track. I put only Kontakt 5 in my Vst rack window.

Here what I got:

After I added Kontakt in Vst rack, Cubase asked me "Do I want to create MIDI track assigned to plugin Kontakt 5?". I clicked to create.

After that I tried to add every midi track this same Kontakt 5 from Vst rack:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/841/9t1n.png/

But this time, I have right to choise number of MIDI channel :)

And for test purpose I tried to assign to my all drum tracks (which are solo) some drum kits from kontakt 5. Next steps in the Kontakt 5 I choose drum kits and tried to assign to it to the channel 10 (my drums)

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/199/pr5d.png/

Every drum track is assigned to the number 10 channel, but I can't get sound.

Where I make error?

Thank you for your time. You already helped me a lot!

Regards!

This can have several problems now.

As you probably saw yourself, the MIDI channel has these "horizontal bars" as icon. Of course, you need to setup THESE channels, that have your Imported MIDI. Not the newly created ones.

Same with the MIDI Channel Nr.

Else, the routing looks correct to me. Three things that could interfere now:

1) The MIDI data doesn't trigger the right Kontakt notes. Like: one octave too low or too high.

2) you muted the channel that should be sent to Kontakt in order to play samples

3) the imported MIDI's come with so called "MIDI SYSEX" data. That means, this data sends to Kontakt program changes, volume and pan informations, certain values for effects or even General MIDI specific parameters to change ADSR and OSC values of a synth. You need to get rid of these of course. (hint: the List Edtior!)

I can't help you much more at this point, other than: please consult the manual. Or try to fins dome tutorials about Cubase on YouTube (plenty around!).

I don't see any more issues to be honest.

@Compyfox

Thank you for you answer, but unfortunally, I didn't make any progress with sound from Kontakt 5(stand-alone version)...literally, I can't hear anything from that plugin (even I can't hear preview sound when I press a little speaker icon in order to preview samples...it is so strange. I use earlier this Kontakt for Pro Tools and it worked.

But I tried everything...I watched many videos on by your recommendation YT and I am really frustrated.
I have only sound when I play my song with integrated midi sound in cubase, but it is bad quality of sample :)

So I decide to make all screenshot of important settings, maybe you can get idea easily if you see this...

So, this is Kontakt window, which has loaded a few instruments. You can see that I have levels visible and that I have orange light turn on (event indicator), so I think that something could happend :)

2) You can see levels in my main windows od Cubase as well (blue strips):

3)So, I read on forums, that I need to activate some outputs from Kontakt in order to have possibility to have separated instruments:

4) Activated Outputs from Vst rack (Kontakt 5):

I hope that you will have now better insight in my computer preferences and I hope that I will solve this frustrated problem with your help. Cheers! :help:

One thing you have which is useless is you have VST System Link activated as if it's going to send the audio to your speakers.

that isn't what that is for at all. that sends data to another computer or computers with Cubase on them (such as using the additional computer(s) as an instrument rack and getting the audio back to the primary machine) and ports it back through audio connections, eg., ADAT, S/PDIF, via an audio interface that is compatible with that protocol. which you evidently are not using. So are you hearing *anything* from Cubase properly? Donno, but disconnect that anyway, there is no sense to it.
