is there somewhere on the web a site which is able to id a certain song out of a given sample ( f.e. as mp3 ) ? i've heard that but i can't remember really ...
any info ?

I know of techniques that can do this - fingerprinting i believe its called. I did research it a while back but i'v forgot the finer details. It basically works by comparing the spectral image of a sample with a snap shot which is kept on record. It sounds like bollocks but apparently it can identify any record with in ten paces. There's also water marking which involves imbedding a signal into the file which can be called upon later to identify the origin of the file. Both methods are effective but have their flaws too.

The first big one i remember hearing about was Shazam, i think its still just an android app. Theres new ones, you upload a chunk of a song, itll search its database.
The tech is there, how good the databases are, is a different question.
Try to upload a song by one of the major record companies onto youtube, youll get an email within a minute or two telling you that youve uploaded a copywrit song.
Just google 'song identify' and youll come across a lot of them, but again, how good their databases are is up in the air. I would guess since Shazam has been around a while, theyd have a good database by now.
Most, you can upload a short part, others claim to be able to ident a song by you humming or whistling it?

I have Shazam and Soundcloud on my iPhone and they do an amazing job.
Once I was looking up a standard classical piece and it have me the exact version of both the conductor and orchestra/pianist playing it.
Plus you can even hum or whistle the tune. Truely amazing!
