That would be interesting.. to produce with the newer version and mixdown with the older version..zvenx wrote:Spire may well be the first software synth where the vintage version is treasured more than the modern version

That said, I'm not hearing the difference, especially since I layer.. so if it is a little thinner then all the better.. if it becomes a lot thinner then we have a problem.

The thing is, the difference in sound is at the very high frequencies. It's shrill and harsh compared to the original which was almost shrill and harsh.
I can accept that the difference is very small for most of you but because it has crossed over some kind of threshold for me it is annoying as hell.
In some presets you notice the difference much more than in others.
Like I said earlier, I'm trying to investigate what has changed and what causes it. Yeah, this can be remedied with some minor EQ + high frequency limiting (like tape saturation) but I'd rather not deal with that.
You can get similar differences in many other soft synths that allow you to oversample the synthesis engine.. or uses some other tricks to get rid of the harshness. The difference is almost always in the very high frequencies..
It's possible that I'm very sensitive to this area as I deal with it almost on a daily basis when mastering. Seems to be an area a lot of people don't seem to be bothered with or can't hear, or perhaps their equipment doesn't let them hear it.. or I'm just weird and was born to hate this kind of harshness.
Not sure what the cause is but it's there and it's weird.. and fascinating!
Cheers!

Definitely strange. When comparing the two sound samples you posted earlier, I went a little further and checked the difference through an analyser.
They cancel out right down to -140db (excluding the attack of the sound) so at least in tone, there really is no difference in that particular sample.
But be sure to post other examples or get in touch with the guys via email if you can find a sound that has a bit more of an obvious difference. They are really helpful and provide excellent support in my experience

I cannot hear a difference with my existing projects. If there is a difference it must be very small or only with some more extreme settings.
Maybe the developer can give a answer about this.
Anyway, I think it would be the best option to provide some quality settings "Draft/Normal/High Quality" and with different settings for online/offline rendering.

Definitely hear a difference! Installed 1.02 and played an existing project, and it just sounded different so re-installed V1.0 (I missed 1.01)everything back to normal! Came on KVR to see if others had noticed a difference or just me, and found that I was not alone!!

Please, Reveal Sound, whatever you do.. do NOT sacrifice any sound quality just to improve CPU. That'd be very bad as I think most of us purchased Spire due to how it sounds!

There's a world of difference between true code optimization and the rather shady alternative which is to reduce sound quality in order to gain perceived CPU reduction.
Having said that I have no idea which route Reveal Sound are taking, I just hope its the former.

The high end is different, as the sample demonstrate. Very subtle, but it's there.
Why the developer is not commenting yet?
I would like to know their side as well.

Our primary goal is to reduce CPU usage and keep sound quality on the same level.
However, in version 1.0.2 some settings a little biased.
For example presets with a fixed phase of the oscillator will be quite a bit different sound.
We'll fix that soon in the next update. The rest of the sound is identical.

Note: before I cause mass hysteria and a witch hunt, lets be honest here. This can all be a perfect example of the PLACEBO effect!!! It is not proven one or the other way until I've done a proper ABX test and right now I don't have the time nor patience for one. If any of you suddenly hear something just because I've voiced my opinion, you can be 100% sure it's placebo in your case.
The difference, if any, is very small.. but irritating to my ears. Not sure how large a role the different envelope shape has to do with it but I'll investigate once I get some spare time (my daughter just had her 7th birthday and invited all her class mates.. yeah.. it was CHAOS! Never knew more than a dozen 7 year olds can cause gray hairs. I just got massive new respect for any and all teachers across the globe! Tomorrow I'm in a coma).
Cheers!
