I've been looking at this app now that it is at $29.99, but still am not compelled to purchase it.

I've looked at every video and audio I could find and it looks interesting enough

I do like apps that let you control the rhythm and try to devide it up to be interesting as a base to improvise over, although I have no interest in electro Dub Hub Sub --or House/Spouse\Grouse (whatever!) type beats.

I did hear one audio that made me think this may be worthwhile because of the interesing subtle rhythms it had created that maybe could be used to play over (jazz)

Any feed back on this in terms of a device being able to create interesting subtle rhytms that are not in your face artificially fast repetitive knock you over uber fast congos or Tablas sounds?

I think you may be confusing looping wav files with the types of waves used to trigger beats in Different Drummer.

The basic idea in different drummer is that every time the wave crosses the threshold a note will be triggered.
But this is then modified by other waves that for example determine whether that note is actually a rest or how long a beat it is.

It's an app where perseverance is required to get good results or a brilliant mathematical brain.

I own it but am still struggling to reliably get what I want out of it, but have had some lucky results at times too.

Do you think the price or $29.99 is worthwhile in your experience?

Do you think it would be possible to lay down an interesting rhythmic foundation with this to improvise over once it is under control??

Yes I think you can get some dare I say different rhythms out of this.. In the latest version there is a facility to share rhythms with other users and download the ones they have chosen to share.

As for value I can't really say.its expensive by Ios standards but the market for something which moves so far from the usual sequenced drum machine is probably going to be a lot smaller.

On balance I would have to say I don't think I'm getting value out of it, BUT I haven't really invested the time it needs, there's always something else new and shiney that comes out and demands my attention for a little while.

well perhaps Nave or Animoog would be a better choice but I have a prefered interest in createing rhythms.... :0)

A common measure of the cost of an app is how many starbucks coffes you have to forego to get it, ie since most of them are less than one coffee it's not big deal if you don't actually end up using it that much .

Sounds like the jury is still out on this and the $30.00 price tag is questionable. (as far as the app getting prime usage)

I would even think twice if this was a $1.99 app.

great app, IMHO - lots of fun and also a great tool to develop beats.

one of the best iPad apps for creating tracks.

Wow, quite the 180 of opinions on this but that is what I expected.

Then, would you say that this is really a device for more "elecronica" type music and the variations off that.

I had a thought that I would try to create some interesting broken rhythms that I can improvise over but I'm not sure that this is "that" app.

I heard one clip that did sound like it had possibilites but everything else sounded like uber electrica stuff.

almost all the clips sound similar with in your face fast tempos with very little subleties but this may not be reflective of this app.

Hi jazzimprov, I'm the developer of Different Drummer and I can assure you that there are no stylistic or time signature limitations to my method. As an improvisor myself, with fusion roots, I have made sure that the app has a wide range of expression. The syncopations that are possible are nearly endless but better than that, exploring them is as easy as dragging the rest or tie waves around. The dynamics wave create fascinating, complex polyrhythmic accent pulses that I think would be quite appealing to a jazz man. The rhythmic complexities far exceed ordinary methods in my opinion. I have improvised with it many times and you can even set drums to a given tonality for added harmonic interest. My favorite thing about the waves is how human they make rhythms feel almost with an African vibe...which is indeed different relative to most boom boom boom beats you hear a bunch of. Ill try to post a more jazzy beat soon. Thanks.

Indeed according to iOS standards and I wouldn't recommend anyone buying an app like this at that price. There is no need to encourage the devs to raise their prices and violate the sacred principles of cheap apps, which is to sell many at low prices and not few at high prices.
