it's the 13th, so let's do a public beta
http://www.xoxos.net/vst/bongbetaDEMO.zip

the demo is for evacuation purposes only ....no, that's not true.. the demo is only to flaunt my demo restriction.

itm if you survive the demo and don't want to wait for the full-dress release, it's $25/$15 previous customer.. any of the paypal buttons on my site will bring up my paypal email addy, make sure you add a note to say bong.

no manual atm, there really is not a bit of useful information in it anyway. beyond the key mapping and names on the gui any further information on the algorithms falls under "secret fairy magic" and "it's digital".

well, i'll tell ya, three days since it's been available after "8000" thread views (in reality, that's closer to 1500 actual human views, but don't worry about it because the artificial post count ego inflator is only used on me) and there's f**k all anyone has to say about it.

didn't i tell you this was coming?

let's play a game, it's only fun if you're honest - if you're a mason reading this thread, don't post. all non-masons post immediately.

people, pee-pull, i tell you. you cannot disappoint me if i have no expectations ;)

ty :)

i expect the majority of vst users will never have a substantial career involving production. the balance are likely to opportune social applications for their music throughout the course of their practice but will not be populously received.

imo the foremost application for contemporary music production is to disenfranchise the medium. i try to petition non-musicians for the place music has in their thoughts and find that many westerners have a similar experience to my own, that the recollection of a piece of music absorbs much of their free mental energy throughout the day.

i ask people whether they can change the songs they are thinking about or if it's pretty much a straight playback, i get varied answers which seem to make sense.. people who have an interest in redaction have mutable playback. others are satisfied with their tentpole.

i find one of the most valuable skills or talents is to be able to not do or stop doing things.. abstinence, self-restraint. i remember it used to be extremely difficult to not be thinking of a song constantly. it took a while to be able stop.

this is what i wish to empower.

at one time, i believed the proliferation of vst would increase memetic count (...) but in modern times, uninteresting ideas are uninteresting, if you see what i mean. people understand "beer goggles", i guess "xenopath goggles" may be a similar enough concept. i mentioned music from different cultures in a thread recently and the thought instantly got pigeonholed as "adding arabian flavour" because we know how to think about cultural diversity. (soz to whoever said that).

i've ranted this rant many times over the years.. perhaps it's a welsh/bard thing, i believe that music isn't trivial and some consideration must be applied to the practice.

so the primary application of the home studio nowadays is, for me, to allow the individual to reduce their entrainment. to disengineer the marvels that have compounded into romances of genre or other attachments. to imbue a functional autonomy independent of the presence of cervin key's back catalogue or what have you.

this is antimusic. i guess antimusic has existed almost as long as recorded music has. through simple parody or more intense deconstruction (there's a solipsist subtext in negativland's "u2") antimusic reminds us that the pop stars so admired by "pre-teens and up" are trash to build us up, to mellow us out, or whatever. things we shouldn't need any persuasion for, but supposedly "help us deal with the other bullshit we get in life" or, at least to help us dance and f**k.

antimusic is for me exemplified by john trubee and the ugly janitors of america "the communists are coming to kill us all"... it's an accomplishment nowadays for a john to be true.. the united states really does need a clean up crew for all of its ugly.

i'm not a great music lover. i am occasionally a music user. it is a means and not an end. i prefer to limit my conception of "ends" to things that i consider more substantial, like the wellbeing of discrete instances of individuals. while i'd expect most of the people reading this are likely at some point in their attempt to integrate a music career into their lives, i wish good luck to all of you with the intent to disentrain yourselves.

Agreed. When I'm testing a virtual instrument, I like to get a feel for the range of timbres it can produce. The asking price for bong when compared with its ability to generate a diverse set of sounds is extremely fair. And if you've got an external controller, it is inspiring to dub modulation of the parameters over the initial set of sounds.

well, the beta's been up for almost a week now, and i have have had

f**k all

posts about it, despite that we were driving 500 thread views each day for a few weeks there up until i posted it. and heck, we're still going at close to 100 a day.

there has been

f**k all

comments about the demo restriction, which i was hoping would be found comparatively enjoyable.

of course, readers of this thread are invited to extend

f**k all

consideration for the implication that *just perhaps* my thread count is being artificially increased, or that, geez, maybe this thread is only visible to masons and lalo (maybe he's skull and crossbones or something so he can say that honestly). (and there's no reason to say anything good about the restriction now as it would only come across at trying to appease. feel free to still say bad things about it though.)

of course, this all is no surprise to me as every product release i've had over the last three years has been "encouraged" beforehand and invisible afterwards, in all likelihood i'll be sent about $120 over the next three months, enough to keep me in big bags of flour. seriously, this year, apart from food, i've bought socks, a shirt and a clay pot for my banana tree, oh and a copy of journey to the west for my neice, at about $600 ytd.

that's your world today.

i been moving towns for the last 3 weeks, bloody nightmare, downsizing, loosing stuff, getting kids new schools.

Post

should i start a thread in instruments?

Post

birds ! magic.

Post

maybe someone else start an instrument thread,i'll probly say the wrong thing!

Post

Same worry. I'll post some sound demos later; hope they don't scare potential customers away.

Post

no need. i'll post it as a news item when it's released. need a minute to finish the copy. no one's brought anything to my attention regarding the beta except one issue with the clap and the "clap hall attack too slow" impression which i'd do something about if i could get that impression again :p

i felt, after 600 thread views, that someone would have stated some opinion about the birds.

kaley - i am beyond such concerns. if i say i don't have money to get me some vittles and am gawn waste away it's not because bong needs attention. the oppression that weighs upon my life exemplifies cruelties that are widely applied. don't observe the masons because they are toasting my ass, observe them because they toast many asses. many good, constructive asses that would be aiding society if it weren't for the covert ass toasting.

this is mush more important than whether i or my vst live or die. this, is bullshit.

I don't really know why your stuff gets ignored because it's bloody superb, but for what it's worth the view count seems roughly in line with other threads in my 'all my forum posts' section (where I spend most of my time on KVR). The Klanghelm SDRR thread started just yesterday has 2000 more views than this apparently! I tend to view the thread again every time somebody adds to it, maybe even scrolling back through the last couple of pages to remind myself of context, so that's one way view count can exponentially grow assuming I'm not the only person who does this. The more people in the thread, the more people checking each reply.

I remember reading somewhere that about 95% of any forum community consists of non-posting lurkers. The silent consumer! KVR is about as big as it gets in the audio software world, so that's a lot of lurkers.

Maybe you'd do better in the instruments/effects sections for your releases. I guess people are more likely to browse those forums than they are one of the hundred+ dev forums. The only time most people see this post is the brief moments immediately following a reply that it's in the list of latest posts on the right hand side of the page. I'm pretty sure that's where I heard about Bong and I'd likely have missed it otherwise (I'm not sure I've seen it in the latest posts column since) despite being a Xoxos VST fan.

For what it's worth I'll be bigging your stuff up every chance I get. $25 for all your creations has to be the best value deal there is in the VST world. Having your stuff as a secret weapon is one thing, but it being so secret the creator can barely afford to eat is quite another. Hope things pick up soon enough.

Post

Oh, just to clarify, my comment on the slow attack clap sound was specifically about just one clap sound in one preset, not the clap algorithm in general. I commented because I thought that particular clap preset sounded awesome, not bugged. :)

Post

ty, i did get that sense when you mentioned it. the time i got the impression it wasn't working for me. my supposition is balancing the two cutoff values when they're both very high to produce a value to shorten the attack by, but as said, it's been difficult to regain that perception :) maybe the decay time of something i had in the mix or the tempo. i should have saved the "song" at that point.
