According to Sid Smith, King Crimson are to reform as a 7-piece - Fripp, Levin, Mastelotto, Harrison, Collins, Jakszyk, Rieflin.

I love King Crimson. Discipline is my fav.
But...
I have an album with Fripp and Andy Summers and it is just terrible. It's like they overdubbed guitars onto a Nintendo system.

Will keep my fingers crossed. This would give me a reason to go see a concert again.

Rieflin is my favorite rock drummer - better as an industrial drummer than a modern prog drummer. Because he's a damn HITTER, that's why.

There were two Fripp/Summers albums. I have both on cassette purchased from 'cutout bins' at record shops in the late 80's. Some of the tracks are great IMO "I Advance Masked". Here is one of the really cool tracks from that album:

Keep in mind this was 1982. About the time that Phillip Glass was getting kudos for some ridiculously terrible sounding stuff (to my ear) that just seemed like arppegios on loop. At least there seems to be some melody in this Fripp/Summers project.

Fripp and Summers also had another album, "Bewitched" which has some stellar tracks on it as well. Trying to find links... Here's a good one - get past the first minute or so for some nice Taiko drum stuff at choice points in the possibly odd time signature:

This new KC lineup recycles quite a bit from a recent album: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Scarcity_of_Miracles which has a couple of interesting tracks on it.

Just watched the DVD again of the DISCIPLINE concerts.
Saw it live back in the day.

The band has always been interesting from the beginning.
I'm sure this new formulation will be great.

Come on, Mr. Fripp. Why have you called your last several bands King Crimson?

Don't get me wrong, i LOVE King Crimson. Their earlier iterations were among my most impactful musical influences.

But at this point, it's not even King Crimson anymore. Can't he come up with a new name?
The name "King Crimson" is just a marketing thing anymore, if anything.

And if you think King Crimson is "immune" to marketing or whatever, just listen to Court of the Crimson King, and then listen to The Wake of Poseidon. And then tell me they aren't the exact same "success formula."

And anymore, you could replace Fripp with a well-programmed arpeggiator.

And I'm sorry but Pat Mastelotto just lacks balls, for lack of a better word (using ConstruKCtion of Light and Power to Believe as reference here)

In my opinion, Discipline was their last decent album.

Give me Fripp, Wetton, Bruford, Cross, and Muir. That was my favorite... I know the purists will disagree with this but I also know they will agree with my overall sentiment.

Well, I've never seen KC as a classic "band"-type outfit. It's always like Fripp + a few other guys. Some of these combinations work better than others; I guess some people can stomach Fripp's dictatorial leanings and random tantrums better than others.
The music that comes from this is always interesting at the very least, and exciting and awe-inspiring when it works, which it does more often than naught.

I like Belew as a guitar player, but his singing was always a bit on the whiny side.

As long as Tony Levin is in there, I'm happy. And I'm sure Harrison and Rieflin have balls to spare.
