Thanks a lot! I've got a few compressors to try then. I like Compassion without getting to deep into it, i'm worried i'll end up loving it and want to buy it instead!

Been listening to a lot of demos and reading about C165a, it's highly praised as a dbx emu. So maybe i'll get C165a now and pick up DC8C later, can't do both right now.

I was pretty sold on the C165a from the start anyway but someone pointed me towards DC8C. it's not a question of one or the other but which is more suited to what i'm doing at the minute. Cheers. :)

BC is out of my budget but 112db site seems to be down? :?

Anyway, budget is so tight i can't really go above €30. The C165a was another one that looks good and i was going to buy that after checking out the sk stuff but i was recommended Klanghelm. :)
Hmm the dbx plugins seem to have a really distinct sound and I'm not thrilled with any of them so far, and I certainly could not see using them as a workhorse. The 165 (and all others modelling that comp) is extremely basic stuff.. I think you need something a bit better featured.. Dc8c over that one ANY day of the week.

Then again, I'm one of the very few that's pretty much requested refunds or sold on every sknote product I've bought. I think they are overhyped tragically and its a case of people thinking they are wonderful tools for little money (i think the price tag is skewing their judgement) when in fact I generally think they are poor tools for average money. Have used most of them and I've stopped even bothering now, its just become an annoyance for both myself and Quinto and I will only ever try future ones if there is a demo. So I'm not the best person to comment on those as I simply don't like them. If I was to compare dc8c to sk165 to be completely honest I'd use the analogy of maybe a Hyundai vs a rolls. There simply isn't any comparison. Dc8c DOES bely its cheap price, and is a very rare find.. I basically think that no matter what one owns or uses, everyone should buy dc8c and have it in their arsenal as its just useful. I'd love to see upwards compression admittedly and I guess I'd be pushing harder for it if I didn't have the BlueCat.
Oh but for a demo! :wheee:

Maybe it's a taste or usage thing? I read this entire thread earlier: http://www.gearslutz.com/board/product- ... e-now.html

People seem to love the dbx sound! I like what i've heard on electronic drums and acoustic/rock. Did you listen to the clips fese posted? For more extreme or aggressive compression i think the dbx sounds great.

Anyway i've got to get some sleep so will continue tomorrow!

Cheers. :)

I don't want to hijack the thread, but if you're interested in Compassion, I happen to be selling it cheaply here:

It's a wonderful compressor, but a bit beyond my needs.

Thanks man, a little out of my budget for now but i'm using it for reference when i get DC8C. It depends how DC8C behaves in use, if it's too cpu intensive or buggy it'll be back to the drawing board, this is why i like demos!

Compassion adds about 18% to the cpu load in FL when enabled though and i think on the bus i prefer TDR so far.

So i'll probably get DC8C 2 and maybe pick up C165a depending on how DC8C is for more aggressive compression but i think DC8C will be great for creative sidechaining and adding punch to drums, maybe it's more refined than C165a but there's only way i will know that!

Cheers. :D

Just got it this morning, so far really impressed. Just gotta wrap my head around the advanced controls but the quality of it shines through from subtle to extreme, really adds life to sterile sounds. Only thing is the sound changes drastically when i click on advanced, i thought it worked like Compassion where the advanced parameters were set for each mode.

But i like it a lot, very high quality that i think it's fair to say you wouldn't expect at this price. Cpu hit is not too bad, and i didn't factor in maschine not being multicore but it's not to bad unless i use OS but i don't feel a need to engage that from what i'm hearing so far, in fact i can't really hear a huge difference with 8x OS enabled.

Very high quality though, not heard a compressor preserve the integrity of the source when pushed like DC8C does if that makes sense and it adds some nice mojo to sampled breakbeats. So yeah, just what i was looking for!

SDRR next methinks. :D

Hi musikmachine! As i understand you got both compressors now - C165a and DC8C. So which one do you prefer now?

Is right that C165a is always snappy? (if yes, then I pass. In many cases i need to rid off those transients)

Post

No i just have DC8C 2. I saw you bought it anyway. :)

It's a great all rounder, smooth to aggressive. I have to admit i don't fully understand all the advanced controls yet but it's a tweakers delight. A single instance can hammer my cpu so i won't be adding C165a till i upgrade but i don't feel the need atm with DC8C. :)
