Cakewalk Sonar X3

FWIW (ie not a lot) my personal experience of Sonar is that it's a complete dog. I've tried 4 different versions (bought 1, upgraded to 1, demoed 2 others) on 3 different machines over the years and never once finished a session with it without a catastrophic crash. It's a shame because there was a lot I liked about it but I personally don't hold out much hope for the stability issues improving.

Sonar X2a works great for me. I do mainly audio though so I can't comment on some of the issues people have had. X3 looks like a major upgrade to me. Just by reading the leaked bullet points it seems that Cakewalk have addressed every concern that I have seen discussed on the Cakewalk forums. If your a Sonar user I would wait until the actual release and see what they have done. If your not a Sonar user, I don't know why you care one way or the other. For example...I don't read or care about the new Cubase or Protools or Studio One. They may be great but it doesn't matter if I don't have the product.

i am looking forward to X3. for the most part, X2 has been awesome to work with (have made 2 and a half albums with it). of course, it's not glitch-free. i've had a couple issues w/ v-vocal (which is NOT to be included in X3), a few unexplainable graphical weirdnesses w/ clips, but since i do not use 32 bit plugins/loathed bridges, i really don't get very many crashes. stoked to see the enhancements to take lanes & the addition of Melodyne. looks like i will have to evaluate all these freaking plugins that will be included in the package, maybe i'll have some stuff to sell here in the market place

That's the million dollar question isn't it?clintmartin wrote:. If your not a Sonar user, I don't know why you care one way or the other.
I like technology so I enjoy reading and learning about new tech but I couldn't care less if Sonar is buggy as all get out or ran like the wind since I never actually wanted to use it. Obviously, some do want to use it and do care for that reason, so of course, that doesn't really apply to them.
But the Internet saying "Never looked back!" seems to be an illusion of sorts. We always (repeatedy) look back.
Not to mention saying "Never looked back." every single time the thing you never look back to publishes another version.

I think this means the plugin engine has been totally rewritten. Hopefully, a lot of plugin-related bugs will go away with this release.Noel Borthwick on Cakewalk Forum wrote:Regarding VST3, I will publish an article listing the features we implemented later. SONAR doesn't support the Steinberg specific features like expression maps, but our implementation is goes beyond what other non Steinberg VST3 hosts do today. We chose to implement all the more important and useful features. Sample accurate automation, silent buffer CPU savings, sidechaining, plugin resizing support, automatic VST2-3 migration, hierarchical parameter organization and plugin categorization are a few that that we did. The work in this area however goes well beyond just VST3. The entire VST engine was overhauled so many of these benefits apply to VST2 plugins as well. e.g. SONAR now fully supports mono sidechain plugins both in VST2 and VST3. There are some industry firsts with general plugin management as well. Plugin scanning is now transparent and automatic so you can launch the app and start working immediately in seconds, without waiting for a boring plugin scan operation to finish. Hardcore plugin addicts will be happy to know that there are no more limits to the counts of plugins listed in menus and the browser as well![]()
Talking about collaborations, Waves has worked closely with us through the cycle. I'm happy to say that we have jointly resolved *all* known interop issues with Waves plugins in SONAR.
Peace, my friends. I'm not seeking arguments here.

It seems to me that X3 is a big 3rd party software/plug-in showcase...

Optimal number of audio plugins is one more than you currently have.

I'm looking forward to it too. I was wondering if the Roland items (V-Vocal, R-Mix, TTS-1) would be included now that it looks like Roland is no longer involved; your post answered that. Not that it matters if you have the older versions of Sonar. It is nice to see Melodyne essentials included. I would guess that it will be possible to upgrade to the full version of Melodyne Editor.wetdentist wrote:i am looking forward to X3. for the most part, X2 has been awesome to work with (have made 2 and a half albums with it). of course, it's not glitch-free. i've had a couple issues w/ v-vocal (which is NOT to be included in X3), a few unexplainable graphical weirdnesses w/ clips, but since i do not use 32 bit plugins/loathed bridges, i really don't get very many crashes. stoked to see the enhancements to take lanes & the addition of Melodyne. looks like i will have to evaluate all these freaking plugins that will be included in the package, maybe i'll have some stuff to sell here in the market place
I hope that Cakewalk offers a nice upgrade deal when it's released. I guess I'll find out in a few days.

There has to be something to it though. You don't see me in cubase or logic threads constantly complaining, do you? FL and Sonar seem to have some kinda extra hurt attached. I'm not going to try and explain it, but I feel compelled strongly to post in these threads.LawrenceF wrote:That's the million dollar question isn't it?clintmartin wrote:. Besides, they are cross-pollinated. There isn't just talk of x3, the "big news" is being talked about too.
To cake users that are happy: I'd like you to know that speaking strictly for myself, I'm happy for you. But it's not like it's one person. It's not just a simple matter of moving on.
I guess we'll agree to disagree.

Nah. We actually don't disagree.
Look at Gearslutz and the 70 page Cubase vs Logic thread in the Logic X forum. Most of the Cubase users who have been arguing there for many weeks claim that Cuabse is all they'll ever need, they're happy, everything is good....
... but they're not - really - happy until they can convince Logic X fans that the thing they like so much isn't so great after all.
That's the way it goes... sometimes.
If you're happy with Cubase why would you spend weeks in a Logic forum trying to convinve others who like Logic that Logic sucks? What is the poiint? I have no doubt at all that "some" of the people involved there don't even own Logic.
I also have no doubt that "some" ragging on Sonar - not you
, but somebody - either have never even owned Sonar and/or haven't owned it in years, but just enjoy piling on.
It - the compaints - may all be true... but one thing has little to do with the other.

I know for a fact that some people have had problems. I guess some of you guys probably have all of these daws. I certainly understand talking about a problem you've had. I can't afford to buy 4 different daws and I don't want to learn how to use them all anyway. I did a lot of research and picked Sonar a couple of years back as my first daw. X1d was out and worked flawlessly for me. X2a has some quirks but nothing that prevents me from doing what I want. I want you to understand that I rarely use synths and I use midi for percussion only. So I realize I'm not stressing Sonar like a lot of you guys have to do. Regardless of the past and regardless of the new Gibson/Tascam thing, if X3 works and has improved the sound engine, adds VST3, ARA and has 64bit mixing...it will be good for us all. Because your daw of choice will have a nice upgrade coming soon.

I've had the timeline disappear, but not in forever. I'm not one of those people who insist that since it works for me, everyone must be lying. I totally understand if your having problems. My main point is the info on X3 got leaked. The official announcement hasn't even happened yet and it seems people are jumping to conclusions that X3 is going to be a lemon. I'm hoping it's the best daw in history...why? Because I'm a Sonar user. Not because I got screwed by Protools or whatever.
