And the "surface pro runs windows programs" argument is actually pretty valid. As you can use both an external keyboard and a mouse. Not optimal for touch, but still.

Yes they got it right. And it works both with surface RT, pro and Windows 8 PCs. They obviously have figured that the new deal is not just about applying touch screens to otherwise traditional programs but a question of adapting the programs to the touch screen. If others follows until there are hundreds of apps to choose from just like on the iPad, I gladly buy a Surface RT to supplement my iPad.BMoore wrote:Didn't the Fruity guys just release a touch friendly app?

Since the argument is put forward with regard to surface pro being an alternative to the iPad as a touch screen tablet, the argument is not valid. Goes without saying. Otherwise my old non touch surfaced laptop would be just as good an alternative.BMoore wrote:And the "surface pro runs windows programs" argument is actually pretty valid. Audio and Midi Apps for Windows 7 and/or 8 will give you much more flexibility allowing you to have multiple apps open simultaneously and routing between them. So I am considering Windows 7 and/or 8 touch sensitive monitor or the Surface Pro over the iPad. So as the list of apps grows I will be more tempted to go with Windows now rather than an iPad in a year.
I will be using the Windows touch screen apps as an alternate midi keyboard controller and secondly as midi controller for VSTfx's and VSTi's. I may even use it to manipulate my DAW's if they are touch optimized.
See my related thread iPad 4 VS Windows 7 or 8 multi-touch surface:
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 67#5243667 http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 08&start=0
My main concern is that I want to use Windows 7 and not Windows 8 for my music touch screen apps. Not likely I will get the Surface Pro preferring to work on a 20" or larger touch screen where Cubase (mouse and keyboard) will be visible.
Someone may have already made a Windows 8 touch screen adaptor for Windows 7. Have they? I wish the music app developers will make their apps requiring either Windows 7 or 8 and of course Surface Pro.

I think the comparison between windows 7/windows 8 tablet vs ipad 4 or any model of ipad is not an accurate comparison. Would you compare IOS 7 to a Sony Vaio laptop with an i7 processor? The simple answer is no because you cannot compare an OS to hardware. the correct comparison would be windows 7/windows 8 vs IOS 7.Kalamata Kid wrote:Audio and Midi Apps for Windows 7 and/or 8 will give you much more flexibility allowing you to have multiple apps open simultaneously and routing between them. IOS 7 now has IAA plus Jack and Audiobus and a huge list of music apps that keeps growing and offering with each new IOS release. the capability to tie apps together with audio and midi on ever increasingly powerful hardware.
The chances of getting full touch optimization on windows 7 is going to be slim to none. You will be forced to update to Windows 8 anyway, so you can want that windows 7 Surface pro in a 20" model, but probably not going to be ideal with newer touch enabled apps on 7. Go with 8. Anyone that wants to stay in the application game is going to make theirs windows 8 friendly and probably touch, but will take some time.
I like the idea of the Surface Pro and touch enabled apps running in full versions, but that doesn't serve my increasing liking of an ultra portable device like the ipad to capture my creativity on the fly without toting around some anchor of a tablet. If I want that, I just use my laptop now and hopefully will have some fully developed options with a windows touch tablet and PC applications I like in the near future.
Surface Pro has some work to do, but eventually will be a nice option compared to standard laptops. in the meantime, i continue to have a blast with the ipad and some amazing touch apps that already are starting to interact better with each other.

And even more so when/if Windows apps get touch friendly.

@Worm. Are you saying the Surface Pro is "an anchor of a tablet"? Compared to an iPad?

Doesn't make sense. What good is app availability on a touch screen tablet if you can not control them with the touch screen? You shouldn't try to twist it any further. It will get more and more absurd. What you need is touch optimized apps for touch screen tablets and with regard to music there is only one such app currently. Simple as that.BMoore wrote:I find it very valid regardig app availability, and because the alternative IS a "touch screen tablet"..

Twisted logic. A touch screen tablet where you cannot control the apps with the touch screen but only with mouse and keyboard is LESS than a touch screen tablet but just a normal pc. Are you kidding me or are you really thatBMoore wrote:

Will this be enough to run music touch apps? Is there some functionality missing? Google also comes up with other possibilities to do this. FL Studio I believe and a few other apps optimized for touch screen specify Windows 7 or 8.
For music touch apps I am comparing the Windows 7/8 and versus iPad. At this point due to the availability of music apps for the iPad I will choose the iPad. But darn it Windows 7/8 and a touch screen in most respects is a superior system for the musician, at least for this musician. I would love a 30" touch screen on an adjustable stand running multiple apps in my studio. You need not make this comparison but I have to decide which way to go. Yes iPad for the time being.

Are you really saying you think that regular windows apps & plug-ins e.g. cubase, sonar, reaper, diva, zebra, dcam etc can't be controlled using the touch screen on a surface pro?IncarnateX wrote:Twisted logic. Here is a video of surface pro as a portable rig with maschine - running vst and all that good stuff - as a maschine owner that looks sweet !

I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

Well there is the case for hybrid use. That is you use a keyboard/mouse for tasks that are best suited to that, and touch (which is necessarily less information dense than the traditional GUI and so requires more swapping around) where it makes sense.IncarnateX wrote:Doesn't make sense. FWIW: FL Studio 12 GUI will be 100% vectorial allowing us to adapt it to suit the usage mode and display resolution.

No I am saying t is a pita to do so compared to iPad apps. And the guy in the video is using the controller not the touch screen. Another time when you will prove a point with a video, you should really watch it first. WTF is tha matter with you guys? Are you on drugs?ericj23 wrote:Are you really saying you think that regular windows apps & plug-ins e.g. cubase, sonar, reaper, diva, zebra, dcam etc can't be controlled using the touch screen on a surface pro?

To be fair. That video really does not show anyone controlling anything from that touch screen.ericj23 wrote:Are you really saying you think that regular windows apps & plug-ins e.g. cubase, sonar, reaper, diva, zebra, dcam etc can't be controlled using the touch screen on a surface pro?IncarnateX wrote:Twisted logic.
