Hi
Are you one of those who occasionally complain about apps released without Audio Copy and Paste (ACP) or Audiobus (AB)? I am for sure, often to a hysterical extent. However the other day I learned a cool trick to get audio out of such apps without recording to PC or using the horrible iTunes transfer. It will cost you, but not much. I got the trick from the iOS freak "PanthsOfDead" ' s (POD) homepage:

http://www.pantsofdeath.com/pantsofdeath/the_new_pants/

What you need is the iRig guitar connector and a set up like this

I have rewritten the otherwise drum app oriented tip on POD's homepage to fit instruments like synths.

1. Connect the guitar-in socket to the phones out socket.

2. Plug the ipad/mic plug into the ipad phones socket

3. Open up a audio recording app (e.g. Audioshare) and select Mic as an input and Press record

4. Switch over to your non ACP/AB app and control it with an internal or external sequencer/arp (you cannot hear what is going on, so you have to make a sequence on forehand)

5. Go back to the recording app and press stop

6. You now have your recording in the recording app to edit further

If the app cannot be controlled with midi or an internal sequencer/arp then you can at least use it as a sample source (e.g. kraftpad)

It is not optimal but to me still better than being dependent on PC or alternatively not buying a cool non acp/ab app.

iRig guitar connector costs 29,99 € (40,6 $) and I am going to buy one tomorrow. Just wanted to share this with similar minded.

Big thanks to POD for posting this tip.

Cheers

Well, the point is not to be dependent on too heavy external gear but stick to the mobile concept. First I am not sure whether you can actually record the iPad's output into it' s own input this way. Secondly, it would be much heavier to bring with you than the iRig connector.

But thanks anyway.

The problem with the Irig is that it's mono only..

Thanks a lot for this info! I was about 15 minutes from buying one. This changes the perspective a lot. Well, then it is good for drum apps and maybe some mono basses only, I guess, and that is not something I need currently.

Thanks again. I owe you one.

Great! I have to accept a little larger interface than expected then, but it is still portable and gets the job done it seems.

Thanks again. I owe you two now. :)

The UCA202 is even cheaper than iRig, so I will make it a double :tu:

Don't forget it needs a camera connection kit or equivalent....

Sure. I got a CCK , which I use with my Oxygen 49. Have just learned that some midi gear I didn't think would work through the CCK on the iPad actually do. E.g. I almost bought a new controller for the iPad until I learned that my Oxygen worked. And now also the UCA202. Cool.

Thanks again.

Isn't there an app for that? There has to be a loopback app???? I didn't realize that's what you wanted to do.

Unfortunately no. The sandbox approach has so far not even allowed for an "record what you hear" -app. That audiobus devs convinced Apple to lighten up on the connectivity of apps was a miracle in inself. But still no record-what-you-hear unless the app is AB or IAA compatible. :(

Man, you guys almost had me believe that my iRig was good for something.

Back into the dustbin it goes.
