Can someone who has already jumped into the upgrade, so called "early adopter" confirm how many of those new plugins are locked to X3? BlueTubes, Addictive Drums, etc. can these be used in other DAW? Just checking to make sure that I have options in case it turns out to be buggy. At least I can use these plugins in Reaper.

One interesting thing I noticed that CW is now a bit more open than past. They have started giving out info on next patches X3B and X3C. Which is really nice IMO. At least the roadmap is pretty clear, one can decide when to join ;-)
I went with the Studio Version, so I can only comment on a few plugs, but the Bluetube series are locked to X3. I tried to pull them up and Reaper and a message popped up saying they were tied to "X3 and above". I would assume that the other plugs would follow suit.
The Nomad Factory stuff is tied to X3. But the others are standard VSTs - Melodyne, Addictive Drums, Lounge Lizard, BiFilter, etc., all work in Live 8.4.1 64-bit. Some of the other plug-ins that came in X2 and earlier are still tied in to Sonar - no change: Breverb 2, RMix, TH2 Producer, etc.

The Nomad Blue Tube collection is definitely locked to X3. Even the Prochannel Tape Simulation plug is locked to X3 so that means you can't even use them in X2 if you run into a temporary problem. Forget about using them in Session One. I wasn't paying attention if they made that clear before the purchase but part of my reason for upgrading from X2 to X3 was the plug-ins that may have been able to be used in my other three DAW platforms. Ehhh, live and learn.

I understand that Melodyne and Addictive Drums are not locked. But I already owned Melodyne and I have tons of Toontrack drum products so there isn't any personal comfort there.

So you counter your personal slander with something that is supposed to make us respect you? There are always those that will (because let's face it, people love to pray on others misery) but there isn't any excuse for it. You're outnumbered (though the meanies are making a valiant push!)

My take on the X3 release based on this weekends purchase is that if you are a regular SONAR X series user and you like it, this will be a good upgrade for you. There are several improvements, a few major feature additions and a bunch of usable plug-ins to add to the normal weekend warrior or semi-pro guy's arsenal.

If you have moved away from SONAR and you're watching from the sidelines with a ton of high quality plugs wondering if it's time to go back home - maybe not.

For all those with some audio glitches using SONAR X series.... I have a QUAD CORE PC with multi threading, an APOLLO with TB running under WIN 8... X3 works GREAT... very stable with large projects. The multi touch support is amazing and gives you RAVEN capabilties in console view.

A couple of versions back I stumbled upon something, though. SONAR has a setting that sets the max threads it will use.... I had mine set to use all 8.... I found I was getting some audio glitches (I was back in WIN 7 then) trying to get my APOLLO to work on the PC in thunderbolt mode. Anyway, I discovered that if I set the max threads used by SONAR down to 5 or 6, SONAR still screamed but the freed up threads became available to the OS and all my audo glitches and unstableness disappeared.

I know this is off topic but for those not sure of the stability of SONAR, there are tons of fine tuning you can do to work around most of the issues that come up.

It has been rock solid for me since and I upgraded to X3 this weekend, through my biggest project at it and it performed like a champ. I am very impressed with this upgrade and glad I am a user of SONAR. Did I say how cool the touch features are with the CONSOLE view and a 27 inch monitor?

If you have abandoned cal, why not just put all the midi functions into a dedicated command list within the host itself like all the others?
Yeah, and StudioWare...

TheoM wrote:hmm.. dropping v vocal is weird. Ok it's unstable, but what happens to all those with X2 projects using live v vocal tracks that load them into X3? This is precisely what i mean about cakewalk.. who does stuff like that? Heck, i can still load songs in logic X from windows versions! The EXS is there in tact, even their very first synth, the ES1. Steinberg used to drop stuff but they don't do it anymore either. Cakewalk seem to make it a habit. It's really sad. So.. what this tells me is if one wants to use v vocal but has had massive X2 instabilities (even unrelated to v vocal) won't get a bug fix and are shit out of luck.
Just for a heads up. If you have v vocal installed from an earlier version it will still work with X3. Also if you do a reinstall of X3 you can install X2 (or any previous version), but only the bits you want like plug ins for example.
How many generations of Sonar are users supposed to maintain when they reload their OS (thanks to the Windows Registry) or move computers? In the end, the only solution is to render the audio and dump the plugin. Or multiple plugins, in the case of the licensed stuff that's been in Sonar over the years.

But then, the bundled Tassman lead AAS to get my money for a full version, so i guess all the developers are happy. Who cares about the users.

Now that is interesting news. One of the things I disliked about upgrades from Cake was the loss of previous items.

I think it was verson 6 they introduced some midi fx from Ntonyx that I really liked and then they dropped then in the next versions. I probably could have moved them into the version 8, like the CAL programs, but never took the time to investigate.

Thanks for this tidbit dredd i knight.

Happy Musiking!

My pleasure dsan :)
Yeah it is good to know. I once did a reinstall of version 5 or 6, but only a couple of the plugs that had been discontinued. You just have to make sure of what bits you want when the custom install dialogue comes up.
Mmm I dont recall those midi plugins; might be worth looking into.
Install order matters. Start with the oldest and move forward. Otherwise, you get weird dependencies and whatnot for external tools (like Sound Forge) and plugins (no specifics, but this is what i recall) and shortcut/filetype associations.
