You must not do any sound design with various synths...
I do but I am not sure what that has to do with anything I said or why you made such a weird assumption.

They're pricing themselves right out of the hands that use them the most.
Makes alternatives look that much more attractive. They are heading toward workstation prices for only a drum machine.

If you are considering going all Maschine and not using a computer DAW, how would you do sound design on your synths?

I don't think so. Maschine is WAY more than "only a drum machine".

I have Komplete so I can make patches on Massive, FM 8, Reaktor, or the slew of other vst synths that I use. Maschine does host vsts and I could also use hard synths with it if I wanted to. For me Maschine gives me that Mpc style workflow that I missed with the power of a computer but its software lacked the power to do what I really wanted it to do. This will fix that problem. Also I am more of a hip hop guy than a synth music guy though I do play with House some.

Man, those drum synths look and sound great! (Judging by the demos). I've wanted drum synth modules in Maschine but this exceeds my hope. The software upgrade looks well worth it too for multi-core support. And finally having macros per sound will be amazing! Also it sounds like they've finally made parameters directly automatable as well.

So is it multicore when used as a plug-in as well?

I don't think I really care about the huge new controller. nice screens sure. But I have a pretty nice screen for it on my laptop already. It's funny that controller screens are trying to be as close to the computer screen as possible but touting the benefits of not needing to look at the computer! Why would you not want to look at the computer? It's the mouse you want to get away from! (For us office worker types).

I don't understand how synth sound design is supposed to be impeded by using only Maschine. It loads VSTs and AUs just fine and you can do sound design exactly like you would in a DAW. Obviously it's not a DAW, but the main difference is the lack of audio tracks and arrangement functions.

I got confused... I heard someone say that the new studio had an audio interface and could be run standalone. Turns out that is not true, but somehow I thought you meant computer screen free not just DAW free. Of course, even if it could be run standalone, that doesn't mean you had to... Anyway, back to the discussion...

using Maschine as a DAW - how do you deal with audio tracks? Just make them out of triggered samples?

what other limitations does it have over a std DAW?
