The Ultranova is awesome... I'd save a few more bucks and get it. Sounds incredible. Just checked one of these out at Guitar Center. Really impressed with this and built-in audio interface, Plugin control for DAW. Best sounds I've heard lately hard or soft. I'm talking myself into this.

The MiniNova is not a computer MIDI interface. MIDI can be transmitted between the MiniNova synth and computer via the USB connection, but MIDI cannot be transferred between the computer and external equipment via the MiniNova's MIDI DIN ports.
I see midi port and piece of hw full of dsp. I don't understand why? Marketologism?

When someone comes up with an original keyboard design, maybe. Its got keys, mod wheel and pitch bend, knobs buttons and a matrix. And the mic could perhaps be seen as a reference to the Supernova (II only?) having mic inputs and vocoder?Torchlight wrote:Shockingly blatant rip-off. Not even an attempt to disguise it. Thats the only thing that maybe looks like that, but I doubt the companies have Samsung vs Apple levels of resources to test the theory...
And mostly one keyboard looks like any other to me, appart from the branding...

My thoughts too. I can't say I see that much of a resemblance between the two. Different layout, different set of controllers even. It's not a ripoff in the slightest. So it's a small keyboard synth in a similar vein to the Microkorg - not the only other one in the market place by a long shot. If the MiniNova is a ripoff of a Microkorg, then you can also say that an Alesis A6 is a ripoff of a Jupiter 8...which must have been a ripoff of a Prophet...ad infinitumWhen someone comes up with an original keyboard design, maybe. just thought to give a shout to this piece of hardware - i gave it a spin at work and i fell in love with it, it was the most fun i've had for quite some time. most likely i'm going to purchase one soon.
people keep mentioning microkorg but i find the mininova more interesting although i'm not sure what the actual differences are. from what i've seen and heard of them, the mininova is just more exciting and invites you to play around with it more.
somebody said that the "genre" knob makes it feel cheap, and i do somewhat agree to that. there's even a dubstep genre setting. but i believe this is just a sign of the times and it's just there to make it easier for you to find what you want, for example if you wanted to incorporate sounds of some other genre beyond your comfort zone you can easily explore the possibilities with that knob. the sounds are also incredible so it carries you further than just sparking creativity.

A little video i came along (thanks Youtube recommendations), which shows all of the keyboard lead factory presets, thankfully a little more detailed than when just switching through them:
Edit: Oh, he posted all strings and pads too:
LOVE the pads of this thing.

No, this definitely does not also function as an audio interface. But I'm guessing they wanted to do something to a) differentiate it from the ultra (so that there is still an impetus to buy the ultra over the mini, and b) keep the cost lower (even though as people have said, some find it a bit pricey as it is.)
It's fantastic. Sounds great, looks great, and is a whole lot of fun to work with.
That one site... is it Sonic State? Also has a video on youtube where he goes through all the presets.
I think the vocal stuff is one thing that the ultra doesn't have or at least doesn't have as nicely implemented as on the Mini.
You don't really realize how much power this thing has until you fire up the editor!
And yeah... it does look very much like a MiniKorg in some aspects. But that's okay by me. The two actually go together rather well as they have a different quality of sound that kind of complements each other. Sort of makes for a nice combo for a live rig. And I have to say... a lot more fun visually than watching someone mousing around on a laptop.

And that's actually the one issue i have with it. I wished they would release this as a VSTi.Sequent wrote: You don't really realize how much power this thing has until you fire up the editor!

Well, if it was just a matter of it being software, there are already a lot of very good choices out there already. Maybe they will release it as a vst at some point... it would be very tempting. But I'm also happy to have it as hardware. I'm actually kind of happy not to be locked into either world and am glad that I've kept around some of my old hardware. It's definitely nice to be able to make music without always having to be tied to a computer.
