Yes, with mouse and keyboard, just like you said :o And they are also...also...AVAILABLE! :o :-o

Intriguing indeed.

I am SO happy we finally have reached an agreement.

Even without a mouse and a keyboard! IMAGINE THAT! Oh, no. You couldn't.
When I was a kid I knew some who were able to clean their nostrils with their tongue....even though it was much easier for them to do it with their finger. But funny enough, cleaning nostrils with the tongue did not became a general standard even though it was possible.

That's kind of how I picture you, when you're answering to this thread: With a finger up your nose.

My decision was against the Surface Pro and for a Android tablet (Nexus 10). For couch surfing it doesn't need such a expensive laptop with a touchscreen like the Surface Pro and with 0,9 Kg it's too heavy.
For travelling it's too big. I think many people prefer a 7 or 8" tablet (Galaxy Note 8, Nexus 7, iPad Mini or similar) or using a smaller smartphone.
For working, a laptop without a touchscreen is IMO still a better solution. We know that many musicians prefer a Macbook for this stuff because of the stability and yes... the design.

Anyway, if I read reviews, the Surface Pro has not the best position and this because of the short battery life, the weight and the cooler. IMO it's not a tablet I would say it's more a Ultrabook.

I am seriously considering the switch from an iPad to a Surface Pro (but the Surface Pro 2 - not 1)

According to some reports the battery life is now approaching 9 hours, and it has a screen upgrade and has up to 512 gig of storage (this being at a pretty hefty price premium)

Still, to be able to run my DAW software and plugs on my gig machine, to me, has a lot of appeal, and I am actually getting rather tired of the whole apple/itunes dichotomy (after several years!) and the restrictions and hassles therein.

Shit, I might even go back to Windows Media Player too, and ditch the iPhone :D

Not saying the Surface is better or worse just that as a solo gigging muso, it DOES offer some interesting and useful alternatives.

If you don't have a laptop already, go for it! I still think the touchscreen aspect of the Surface Pro is rather useless. There are no great apps that make good use of it.
Also, you'll lose the iPad apps.
Why switch? Why not use both?

Post

I am thinking that for what I do, I can use all my existing Windows software and plugs.

Selling the iPad helps offset the cost of the Surface Pro, and would also mean I could stop needing to do things twice - Windows and Apple iOS. And as versatile and really REALLY cool the iPad is, there are limitations.

Post

There are a lot of limitation to the iPad if you use it as an "all-in-one". But I just use it as an extra hardware synth (in an Alesis IO Dock). :)

Yeah I agree for single apps as in your case, it is still pretty cool! If I wasn't a solo and in a full band, it would be a MUCH tougher decision!

I think you are referring to the first generation, not the second. Anyway, as several have pointed there are even better/more powerful solutions sharing the same approach, from other labels, like Dell.
