My PhD was on brain dynamics - developing new methods for analysing EEG that could be used in genetics studies. I once wrote a piece of music based on the EEG of someone listening to a piece of music. Even though I had no idea what they were listening to the piece I wrote from their EEG reproduced aspects of the what they were listening to when they had the EEG taken (major structural changes like the drums coming in or the beat in a few instances). I used the statistical significance of the mutual information between all EEG electrode pairs as the basis for the piece. It was performed at the Sydney Opera House in a concert of similar works.

Cool, do you have recording of the piece?

yep - won't make much sense though as the original is 12 channels (maybe more) arranged in a hemisphere with the audience underneath, so sounds that would be bouncing around now sound out of just one location. But here it is anyway http://icad.org/websiteV2.0/Conferences ... naural.mp3

I still haven't heard the original piece, but here's an article about the concert that mentions my piece http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/pro ... transcript

Hey Woggle, that's an awesome remix method ;)

Also here's the final installment of the series, about Octaves, The Universe and Everything with a heavy dose of pure numerology

Interesting stuff. I know too many producers who have their heads in the clouds.

Better to have your head in the clouds than where the sun doesn't shine IMHO :)

I know what my former highly eccentric afro-american percussion teacher would say if I mentioned just one of the theories proposed here:

"What have your sorry little white brain picked up now, son? I already told you: 12 is the secret number of the universe and all music in the world. All music as well as math come from Africa but have been stolen, twisted and abused by white people all through history. Besides from this Jesus was black, his name was really Jezu, and we still have his body. Now shut up and play!"

:-o

He was a great percussionist though.
