Does any of the mentioned apps play wavefiles looped without any gap? From what I know, the only thing doing so is Mediaplayer 6 (under 98 the exe is called Mplayer2). With Mplayer2 you can even play looped single waveforms (such as one sine wave) and it will play at the correct pitch.

Allright, IMO there's room for developers here. A sample previewer should offer the following things:

- Integration into any standard open dialog. You can open files with Mplayer2 if you have it assigned to the appropriate filetypes and then do a "rightclick > play" action, but that's too tedious when surfing multiple files.
Should of course also work as a standalone.

- Wave file information display. Could be plain things such as bitdepth, sample rate, mono/stereo, but it could also also display whether the files do have embedded loop and root note information.

- Loop play without gaps. This should also cover playing embedded loop sections (very important when builiding sampler patches).

- Some sort of "bookmark" option. When dealing with large amounts of samples I often don't remember which file it was that I eventually liked. So I would just like to bookmark those.

- Along with the bookmark option there could be some "copy bookmarked samples into folder of your choice" function. Just imagine how much that would rule when constructing new drumsets made from samples out of myriads of strangely nested folders.

- Last but not least it should have an audio preference dialog instead of depending on your Windows preferences, along with some volume knob/slider. Very important in case your main soundcard has no proper multiclient drivers and you may want to playback stuff through another MME card while your sequencer is "eating" up your main card's drivers.

So, would anybody please program this? :hail:

Nice terms of reference there, Sascha.

If I had any idea how to integrate with OS dialog boxes , handle bookmarks and play wav files - I would set about doing this one

I will add my name to the chorus, though. Sascha has just defined a killer app for audio software users.

I am almost certain there is a market for this. I'd certainly pay ($10-20) for something that did this well.

One thing I would add to the list -
the bookmark handler could also double as an .fxp/.fxb bookmark tool. That would solve another problem in the vst world - having to go and find preset banks every time you want to load them.

oh! question!
Rob/Matt - does that trackerv3 integrate with the stnadard OS dialog boxes?????

oooh!

Sepheritoh pointed me here to look at Alive (which looks like a kickass soundfont editor, by the way :) ) and I found..........

Downloading the trial now :-o

........ and it works :)

You have to tell it where you store your samples.

It then places a "My Audio" icon on your desktop.

When you open a dialog box - you browse to "My Audio" instead of directly to your samples.

Works like a charm - click on a file and it plays the .wav - neat :)

Needs a bit of work on the file displau, though. Sometimes I get a list of samples with the firs 6 letters only, overlapped by the next column. :(

While that might be nice, it's nothing "generic" or so (I for example don't use FXB/P because I'm one of those leftover Logic users, so I usually just convert them once).
It'd eventually also be cool to have some REX-in-defined-tempo previewing option, but well... a plain sample audition and manager tool for me would be just good enough for a start.

Hm, looking really good - but it doesn't say anything about loops, doesn't even have some sort of "loop" buttons. To me this is very important as I often use extremely small waveforms to build sampler patches. Without a loop function all you usually hear is some very short BRZZZ.
I may try it out later though.

well well , I always hesitate to make direct add for devine machine in posts, but at least I do it with my real name (unlike others....) :D

DM has a lot of loop previewing features :

- 270 favorite folders divided in 10 sections that you can "name",
- sync to BPM preview
- 1/2 bars selection
- original pitch preview
- /2 option when BPM is not well detected.
- auto advance (to browse loops while cleaning the house) :D
- marks of all allready listened files
- differents marks colors depending how long you listened to a loop
- manual mark
- mark when already loaded

Of course it is not to be used outside itself, but we took a lot of time to make it. We could code it as standalone too if you think it worth it. More suggestions are welcome !

@scuzzphut: ACD Systems (the guys doing ACSee) have a product caled ImageFox that intgrates wih open/save boxes. It is designed with images in mind, but can do audio and video as well. It's 30$. I have no real experience with it, so can't comment on funtionality/ eae of use etc.

thanks, spacefox - will check it out :)

this will audition/preview single click.

it's free.
This does look good. Thanks. :D

anybody know where else I can find this fastwav, the site is down.

holy crap, Audio space is AWESOME!!

Post

I bought Audio Space a couple of years ago, but I find that it causes IE to hang sometimes when you type an address into the address bar. This problem goes away when Audio Space is uninstalled. I contacted the devs, but they had no solution.

I'd be interested to see whether anyone else has the same problem - may this would put pressure on them. After all it's probably the best sample browser I've come across. Pity.

Post

why would you need IE while you use the sample browser?, does it cause any problems if IE is not open during use?

sickle666 hey whats so good about it share the knowledge my friend

and did you check out the 'Alive' program on the same site?, looks interesting, what made you chose 'audio space' over the 'alive'?
