Hello all,

I recently finished doing all the post production audio for a short (12m) film. After I was done editing and right before I re-recorded the final print audio track; I realized the fps reading on the mov track was red. Apparently the film I imported is at 23.98 and my session is at 24fps. I just recently began doing longer films where this is really important and would love for someone to help me wrap my head around this.

Is this frame difference a big deal?

In the PT session window there is an option for 23.976, and when I click this the fps on the mov track turns from RED to WHITE (insinuating the fps is now correct i presume). Why is there only an option for 23.976 and not 23.98?

If I now (after fully editing the film) put the session to the "correct" fps (23.976) will the re-recording render perfectly in sync? Or was this something I needed to do initially when beginning my session?

BTW I wont be exporting the video in PT just the audio. I will be sending the director a wav file to which he will then render the audio and video together in his NLE. So in essence it will go back to 24fps I presume.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance,

The main thing practically here is to keep the video editor apprised of the difference(s).

the really salient thing to understand:

12 minutes will, owing to "23.976 and not 23.98", be pretty much negligible. OTOH, over an hour that 23.98 vs 24fps is going to add up.

here's the arithmetic for 30 vs 30 drop:
