Is it bad to have a 24 bar phrase in deep house music?

Chords, scales, harmony, melody, etc.

I know many say "do whatever sounds right", and I agree, but I also want to have my song be mixable by normal DJ standards. So is a 24 bar phrase uncommon / not practical for house music?

Thanks!

Well, googling '24 bars house music' turns up a shockingly small number of results, so I'm going to play it safe and stick with 16 or 32.

Don't listen to Google. 24 seems a perfectly normal number, twice the size of yer standard blues schema.

'24' disagreeing with 'normal DJ mixing standards' seems to suggest that the DJ is totally automatic or very easily thrown off.

and I think that's making the cart pull the horse, fitting the DJ's problem first in order for you to proceed. Isn't it?

are these things really THAT cookie-cutter?

there are IDEAS that naturally come out in the shape /<4 + 4> x 2/ or something and there could be an idea that does something else. But you're happier building that wall behind that notion?

To be mixable for a DJ, the intro and the outro of a song is important and should consist of percussion elements (doesn't have to be 4-to-the-floor).

Between intro and outro you can make how many 24 bar phrases you'd like to make. If it sounds good, it is good.

Awesome discussion. Maybe I'll go back in and keep it! Thanks everyone.

the commom is to think on even groups of 8 bars. But it would be nice to listen a 24 bar phrase.

Break the rules. One reason EDM is so boring nowadays is that everyone copies each other.

Hey, op was asking a serious question guys :P

My opinion is that as long as its not something weird like like a 9 bar phase or 17 bars, it won't throw off a DJ. and the other posters are right, you shouldn't be worrying about the DJ. They should worry about themselves and how to mix your track.

They wear nano-plastic bags (you know, these cool ones) when the boss is around. Bit of a nuisance, sure, but the pay is nice (free firecrackers and wing-twinkles, as well!), so they don't really squabble.
Brzzzzzzt.

Ok, house DJ and producer and jazz musician here. If by 24 bar phrase you mean you have a long phrase over an 8 bar structure that happens to take 3 loops of the 8, that would not strike me as weird. If you mean the form itself is 24 bars, that's more unusual. To be honest, a 24 bar form is almost never encountered anywhere outside of a double length blues. House, the form is pretty much always either 8,16, or 32 bars.

That said, it's only going to irritate a DJ if they're doing some live looping with it.
