Like the title asks, which ones are actually samplers?
Not just sample import player/synths, but samplers.
Seems like most making the claim are just sample players and romplers.
And while we're on the subject, what really differentiates the two -
- rompler and sample player?

Morgana by 112db http://www.112db.com/vintage/morgana/ is one that comes to mind instantly

It is not a sampler as such, but Geist samples... I use it all the time...

unlike that glorified sample player Kontakt :hihi:

DirectWave, I remember it also has automated system of sampling vst instruments, you could load a dll into it and dump a preset to samples.

For my own samples/sample based sounds, i use either EXS24, Ultrabeat (if it's for drums) or Kontakt.

Creating my own sampled instruments is a regular part of working for me, since it gives you the possibility to work with sounds that only you have... :-)

I don't create my own sampled sounds very often; let's say 2-5 times a year; but usually i use them for years...

Ableton Live is my sampler. You can record then load the audio into one of the sample playback devices for further manipulation.

A "rompler" is a sample player with a certain (not change-able) amount of integrated, ready-to-use samples.

A sampler is a plugin where you can add your own samples or you can buy extensions (KONTAKT, for example).

In contrary, many DSK plugins are "romplers" ("Guitar Acoustic" etc.)...

ESC, with the VSTi Convertor option...

Set up your instrument of choice that can load samples, setup FX chains, set the notes you want to record and go to it.... (use something like EnergyXT as a wrapper for this...)

That is just the beginning....

Was going to say Geist also. Also, I definitely consider it a sampler, in the more traditional Akai MPC sens of the word sampler. In that regard, it's closer to an old-school sampler than something like Kontakt is.

I think it's just our definition of "sampler" that's changed a bit over the years.

Are any of these still being actively developed though?

I know customers have been complaining for years on a couple of these and getting no real feedback from the developers (ESC & DirectWave especially).
(After contacting ESC and getting no reply, I opted for Chicken Systems).

Begging the question of whether or not they're effectively dead?

TX16Wx is actively developed.

Geist is being actively developed. A beta (no bugs that I can detect) came out earlier this year. Now granted, FX tends to have loooong beta cycles, but by no means is it abandonware.
