its kinda true, and I'm being 100% serious. i won't deny it. Edit: IN MY OPINION, they didn't get it. It's not a fact, clearly.

And no, I haven't said that music was BETTER in the 70ies or 80ies. There were a lot of Disco crap that sounds the same but there were great songs, too.

It's true for music in general, too. The '90s, people love to say were a great time where all kinds of things were happening, and on the surface, that's what the climate was. But the truth is that it was the era where we lost our freedom.

It depends on where in the world you are talking about. In the UK/Europe it was the late 80s, in the US it was the early 90s. Though there were warehouse parties and stuff in the US in the late 80s the whole "rave" movement didn't really take off until around 1990.

Thats funny because the old heads I talked to back in the 90s said that it was either the 70s (corporate rock) or 80s (hip hop becoming a commercial thing) where that happened. I guess everyone looks back with nostalgia.

1987-1989 were like the pivotal years on so many levels societally.

I think what they were talking about was the business side of things (which to be honest, from what I've read has always been pretty bad from a musician/artist's point of view.)

Without internet (i. e. until the 90ies), people HAD TO go to a record shop and BUY the music. They couldn't steal it in a record shop (at least not that easily). With internet nowadays everyone wants to have everything for free. Free music, free synths, free programs, free images, free animations, free movies etc.

So, from an artist's POV it's much more difficult than in the 70ies, 80ies or 90ies to live from producing music or whatever art.

For me, it's the golden age of electronic music because it's only been a few years that I really started to enjoy it, and the fact that I enjoy some of the music on the radio (aka popular music), which has so much electronic music influence now more than ever before... well, the 80s might argue with that. I've hated music on the radio most of my life, up until recently.

Edit: Synthpop in the 80s was... err... is a joke. Synthpop now... it's awesome, although it's heavily 80s influenced, so some credit must go to the 80s... damnit.
Edit: And I will agree with the OP that it's partly due to the technology.
