What would I need to start a record label?

Seriously I want to know. I am seriously considering this, and if you say an education then please tell me so I can pursue this.


I have a immense interest in digital media production, and have been to numerous film schools which actually got me interested into soundtrack production.

hey you can totally do it, this is something I considered myself. The way I would do it is first find great music that would sell. then I would fund producing a short run of CDs and get it in digital outlets of course. Promote the heck out of it. So takes money mostly. T o spend I guess mainly for promotion. Also getting great artists to sign up with a unkown label might be tough. Like I would love to get Breakfast if I was going to start a label but he is already signed. I actually knew him when he was younger and I know his stuff would sell because he already has thousands of fans. Someone like that.


But hey it is like any other investment, you are taking a risk and may not get a good return. Comes down to money really.

Awesome! I have plenty of music I can find since im a native american from canada who knows a major artist in the industry. I am thinking of using this as a great way to start out. I have a huge background in video production and well I was sitting around and thinking.. well i love music and i might not be the best but I want to do this for a living. Thus the idea of running a music label might be a good idea! I have friends who i think might be interested in this particular venture, and I am also personally willing to go %200 in everything from graphic design to promotion of any artist who is interested in what i have to offer.

I am self taught in a ton of different skills.

- Photoshop usage & Digital art design

- Basic music production skills

- Basic sound design skills

- Video production skills through a video production school

- Creative writing skills through my university

Yeah man you will save a ton of money since you won't have to hire people do all that stuff.


edit: this makes me think, you could start out offering those services to others if you want, right away I was thinking I want to hire you to make a video lol
just an idea that you could maybe fund some of it by offering your services to others.

Oh and maybe working for a label to start might help? Just throwing out ideas

Yeah man you will save a ton of money since you won't have to hire people do all that stuff.

just an idea that you could maybe fund some of it by offering your services to others.

What do you need done? I got a Canon XL2 at my disposal. I need to get a copy of Final Cut Pro though because since i switched to mac i dont have any pro video editing stuff on my system. Before that i was working with Sony Vegas.

What I would expect from a GOOD label is the whole marketing stuff - promoting my music on as many venues as possible.

For example, if you'd know hundreds or thousands of DJ's and radio stations all around the world (and by KNOWING I don't mean only knowing their email addresses), this would be ONE reason for me to participate in a label.

Don't underestimate it, it's A LOT of work, you need 300 % (of effort) at least! There are thousands of small record labels out there with some sort of one-man-show. But they won't find artists without promoting them.

Then you have to build up a lot of good contacts. Because just sending out emails isn't enough. That's something I could do myself...

I have knowledge of Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas.

I also have more than just emails.. I have friends who have earned Juno nominations here in Canada. No they didnt win but it did put them in touch with a huge amount of very big names in the music industry..

That would be more than enough work, for the next years, if not decades...

Because there are many artists who cannot produce videos but they're good in artwork.

Sometimes it takes more than just knowing your setup but knowing your contacts. I have also never really pursued a job in the video industry as much as I wanted a job in the music industry.

I understand! however not all labels can offer the services that will benefit an artist in gaining the utmost exposure!


Some of them seem more bent on promoting via a specific method such as soundcloud promotion or spamming.

Sometimes a label has to go beyond that and provide much better resources for its target audience. I won't go into detail how, but I think there are better options.
