I've owned BFD1&2 for years plus expansions but never used them on a cue.Rhytenow wrote:I think it looks pretty cool as well. Found another pic! And more info!
Load up FXpansion's BFD 3 virtual drum software, and it's as if you're standing inside an incredible-sounding room with every must-have drum component at your fingertips. This third-generation library gives you a huge array of sounds and presets, and an updated browser design makes working inside BFD 3 easier and faster than ever. BFD 3 gives you seven new kits (recorded in two locations), and its dedicated rock, metal, jazz, and brush kits provide the sounds you need to fit any project - regardless of genre. Want to make killer grooves? You're in luck. An improved groove engine and a groove-building rudiments tool make putting together great grooves with FXpansion BFD 3 a snap.
FXpansion BFD 3 Virtual Drum Software at a Glance:
More sounds but less disk space required, and easier to navigate too
Build your drum parts without switching between software programs
More realistic drum sounds with tom resonance and cymbal swell modeling
More sounds but less disk space required, and easier to navigate too
While BFD 3 packs more incredibly detailed drum sounds than its predecessors, new data compression methods means the BFD 3 library doesn't take up any more space than previous versions. There are many mix-ready presets ready for instant use in your projects, and the updated interface is so intuitive you won't have any problems creating your own custom kits too.
Build your drum parts without switching between software programs
The built-in groove construction tools in FXpansion BFD 3 let you create grooves without switching between BFD 3 and your sequencer. And with pre-played grooves by world-class drummers like Steve Ferrone, Brooks Wackerman, Peter Erskine, and more, you'll have no shortage of inspiring drum parts to work into your projects at any time.
More realistic drum sounds with tom resonance and cymbal swell modeling
BFD 3 from FXpansion sounds more realistic than ever thanks to new modeling technology. With control over tom resonance and cymbal swells you can create drum arrangements with more organic, lifelike character than ever before.
FXpansion BFD 3 Virtual Drum Software Features:
Virtual drums and groove creation software instrument
Pre-installed on 64GB flash drive
Includes seven new drum kits recorded in two different locations for a wide range of drum sounds
Kits were recorded with a variety of recording chains for a wide range of available sounds
Tom resonance and cymbal swell modeling add an extra layer of realism and natural sound
Streamlined interface and faster, more efficient audio engine let you work fast and reliably
Fully-editable groove engine makes it easy to construct your own patterns fast
Not that they didn't sound good, just that I need to get music done as quickly as possible and with these sets I always had to spend time tweaking and mixing and playing with them.
If BFD3 has mix ready presets, that could be a deal maker for me plus getting at an upgrade price might seal the deal.I'll have to hear what the demos sound like.

You should try Platinum Samples libraries for BFD then - lots of "mix-ready" sounds. I much prefer the opposite - i like the FX libraries over PS ones precisely because i can endlessly tweak them to suite my needs, whatever they may be.
I don't know what to write here that won't be censored, as I can only speak in profanity.

I'm glad you pointed that out Burillo. I actually have Evil Drums. It's been so long since I gave BFD the boot and I'm sure my ears are years different now then they were then that maybe it's time to take another look at BFD. Maybe back then I sucked so bad I was making the drums sound bad. Went to the Platinum samples site and checked out the demos again and they sound great. It says no eq and compression was used. Don't know if I'm ready to believe they haven't done ANY processing but I'm starting to feel like maybe BFD is worth a fresh look.Burillo wrote:You should try Platinum Samples libraries for BFD then - lots of "mix-ready" sounds. well, they certainly HAVE done processing, it's just that this processing is burnt into the samples, not applied *to* samples.

Ah. Never thought of it that way. Now makes perfect sense.Burillo wrote:well, they certainly HAVE done processing, it's just that this processing is burnt into the samples, not applied *to* samples.

From what I've seen so far, I'm not a fan of the interface. It's too big and has way too much white space, which I find hard on my eyes. Hopefully, there's an option to resize the GUI and/or darken the background. Then again, not sure I'll update anyway. Between BFD2, SSD4, SD2, NI Studio Drummer, Session Drummer 3 and now Addictive Drums that I just got with Sonar X3, I've got more acoustic drums than I'll ever need. I am pretty excited to see the new features and hear the new kits in BFD3, though.

No on the color, yes on the horizontal sizing. It isn't quite as white when loaded up with kit pieces.cryophonik wrote:Hopefully, there's an option to resize the GUI and/or darken the background.

Been playing with BFD 3 this weekend. I found BFD 2 the most difficult of my drum solutions to use. I thought the layout was 'unfinished' and the kits themselves required a lot of tweaking, which was also hard to get into.
Much of the reason I bought the upgrade was to see if, finally, BFD would be a usable solution for me. Happily, the answer is 'yes.'
The preset kits are all mix ready and really require no further tweaking. There is one tweak that I like to do on a lot of kits, which is throw some reverb on the snare. I find that this opens up the kit sound a bit without losing any definition. In BFD3, this is incredibly easy to do. Select the snare channel in the mixer, open FX, and it's all laid out for you. Just pick the reverb I want and viola! Done.
Very deep groove library, great kit presets, logically laid out controls for everything, and very deep editing possibilities (if you're into that). For the most part, no manual needed. Very intuitive.
Cheers

yes, BFD3 is definitely a worthwhile upgrade for me as well. special thanks to the fact that kits now don't empty unused slots, so i can mix and match kick/tom kits without having to load snares and cymbals all over again.

Hi folks, really tempted by BFD3. Looking for an all encompassing drum software that includes great sounding drums, massive drum loop library included and the ability to quickly edit these and create your own loops and fills......the latter being a bug bear of mine and I'd love something that fits this criteria.
Do you reckon BFD3 is what I'm looking for?
I also own Jamstix 3 but hasn't been installed on my PC since I bought the complete pack, well over a year ago I'd say off hand. Want to get a main central point (BFD3?) and then hopefully I'll actually use and get some decent use from Jamstix3 too.

Does this in spades.stein67 wrote:great sounding drums
A semantics thing, but BFD doesn't come with any loops (loops are beat/tempo marked audio files to me). It does come with a lot of MIDI grooves though.massive drum loop library included
Again, no loops, just MIDI patterns/grooves, but you can edit the existing ones and make your own inside BFD3. There is a mini MIDI sequencer with functions like a MIDI editor targeted for doing drum editing. For example there is a rudiments tool where you select a rudiment and paint. You can also drag the MIDI grooves to your DAW for use there.and the ability to quickly edit these and create your own loops and fills
Download the demo when it's available. No way for us to know if it is what you are looking for.Do you reckon BFD3 is what I'm looking for?
Jamstix will drive BFD3 just fine. Why not load and learn how to control jamstix? Then you'll be able to drive whatever drum VSTi you want.I also own Jamstix 3 but hasn't been installed on my PC since I bought the complete pack, well over a year ago I'd say off hand.
