Quatuor Pour La Fin Du Temps - who gets it right?

My favourite by far is the Gawriloff, Deinzer, Palm, Kontarsky version but having had it on vinyl for years it's getting rather worn and with no hope of this ever being released on CD I need a version that is closest - something about the way they play it so sensitively really brings it to life, particularly the cello just sounds like it's breathing.

Any suggestions for a CD replacement? There are dozens of versions and most are not possible to audition.

In the old days this sort of discussion would benefit from that discophile who was a Messiaen fan - Voidoid Surrealist. When it came to knowledge of different recordings he seemed to be in some special category, and not only with regards to classical music.
Unfortunately I too have some old recording that frankly I haven't listened to in a while but back in the days when I was trying to figure music out I almost wore out.
If there was a prize for the greatest composition by someone in a POW camp it wouldn't even be a contest.
Let's see if there are any youngsters around who venture into the realm of great 20th century music...

Unfortunately, I havent heard the recording you are referring to, so it is difficult to make a comparison.
Is Spotify available in your country. Spotify has 17 different recordings in their database including a recording where Messiaen himself is playing.
Maybe one of those fits your desires

That's not a bad idea - why didn't I think of that?
The only problem might be that in my experience the classical stuff on Spotify tends to be at the lower end of quality but it's a start - thanks
