"Abbey Road J37 faithfully recreates the inimitable sonic signature of the original machine"

How can you faithfully emulate something that is inimitable?

Sales/PR apartment going overboard.

It can't be done - but we did it anyway. :D

Interesting plug-in... has a good "tape" sound, has tape compression, a tape delay and all the expected stuff. It seems to be very easy to use and it's not expensive (I've seen it for $126).

Sorry but does Waves ride the bandwagon now?

Pretty much every darn so called "tape machine" is spot on (man, there must be thousands of programmers to actually measure and pull out such tools), and every tape machine does "tape delay" as well.

Who started that?
If it's a multitrack tape machine, tape delay was not(!) part of it. So it's an added bonus. Why?! Don't we have enough tape emulations and recently also a tape sandbox system?

What's next? A Pioneer tape copy machine?

I don't really want to test this one.

Why? Because I was massively dissapointed by a lot of Waves plugins recently. "The Kings Mic" is a ripoff, the REDD is not only a CPU hog, but also overpriced and oversized for what it does (read my review in the backlogs), the RS-56 is a joke (also overpriced), and now this one here.

Looks like Waves took over the Abbey Road "brand name" (sure, they're pretty much non existent now anyway), and then throws out ton of sh*t for lots of cash. Maybe even create an "Abbey Road Pack" in the future and ask like 699USD for it. The name sells (it's like with shoes).

And what of these things can you actually use only? Just the saturation modules, if ever (again: CPU hogs).

Look into the fine prints, take a dive into these tools with measurement environments, question their quality. Do we really need to shove down more money into the "Waves brand"?

Waves REDD takes only 3% of my old Athlon CPU...Yes it is a CPU Hog

Oh I'm so sorry - did I mention in my article that I was using Cubase 7?

Add to that the 8-12 instances with 40-50% ASIO load (saturation modes active). And that on a Intel i7 920!

Nothing to laugh about - sad fact!

+1 I totally agree with you Compyfox. To me Waves reign is over now, there are many indie devs and "smaller" companies who are far more interesting/attractive than them. To me Waves mainly takes benefits about the fact that it was one of the first plug companies, but now there product can't beat the products offered by other companies. Not convinced by the J37, not even willing to try it. I mean, we have VTM, Reelbus and last but not least Satin. To me J37 just seems to be a poor attempt to bring the MPX up to date and to take a small piece of the cake that other devs own with talent. Not mentioning their constant sales, and there WUP which is just a hidden fee...
Not trolling, just giving my humble opinion...

My guess is Waves Abbey Road BTR Tape Machine! :D
Optimal number of audio plugins is one more than you currently have.

J4R1O, sorry but the cat is out of the bag now. I meant what's "beyond" that.

I think it should be pretty clear by now, that the WUP iss adding constant hidden fees. To some it's okay if they only occasionally update. To others it's a PITA.

Still better than Steinberg though. As it is more predictable.

Well, I for one, can not understand the constant bitching about the WUP. It might not be a common practice among the music software makers yet but it is the rule in a lot of fields of *professional* software. First, you do not have to pay it and nothing happens to your software. Second, when you pay you get all the upgrades to next major version free and added plugins to larger bundles. With other software you have to pay the *upgrade fee* for next major version anyway. And third, Waves is probably the only company which offers professional *phone support* 7 days a week.

I'm always looking forward to tape saturation plugins.
Satin was quite a disappointment for me, because it's so subtle that I'm not sure why I should use it. For a tape emulation I'm looking into an instagram like effect for audio. Whats the point of a tape plugin if it isn't a retro effect?

Umm make your music sound better?

Yeah so why would I want to use a tape plugin, which is by definition a retro sound degradation effect, if I wanted my music to sound better/more pristine?
I want distortion, tape compression, wobbling, etc.
Not a mastering EQ plugin that calls itself "tape emulation".

Post

first I was also a bit disappointed with Satin, but after experimenting some time it finally worked as I wanted and expected. It really makes sense if you insert Satin in each channel and use the group feature. Depending on the settings it may still be subtle, but changing quite much in a mix. Using tape saturation in one channel only or only in the master bus is not so much interesting I think.

Well for starters retro sound degradation effect is only your definition not an universal truth. Secondly hi-fi tape machines were very transparent adding only a little imperfection. The effect maybe subtle but it's there and in my opinion and I'm not the only one it makes music sounds better.

And thirdly you can get quite dirty if you want. 1.1 update gives you casette tape speed, then just turn input up, add some noise and wow&flutter and it can sound lo-fi.
