Slots for slide potentiometers - how too?

I am just working out a DIY midi controller and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for creating the slots for slide faders in a case? I would rather avoid the cost of getting a a panel laser cut or machined.
So, has anyone got any ingenious ideas for a diy solution?

The only time I used sliders in a project, I drilled out the slot the best I could (still a bit of a hack) then made a stick on panel from a sheet of thin plastic I had. Cutting a tidy slot in that was pretty easy with a scalpel, I wouldn't say a pro finish but I was pretty pleased.

Drill holes then use a flat needle file. You should be able to buy pot graduation plates that will cover any imperfections. Such as this :

Thanks for the comments so far.
This is more or less what I had reckoned although I hadn't thought of the stick on panel over the top.

Im used to using a jewellers piercing saw which can be very fine, and very accurate, but it would need a matching, notched,
benchpeg (see below), and would also depend on what the material was. You could maybe even get away with clamping a steel ruler to the material as a guide for the saw.

An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."

Not sure yet what material I will use, still thinking things through.
Thanks again for the comments.

if into plastic, you could use heat to score a
guide in there first (using some sort of ruler
guide for straightness)(-then a dremel tool with
a straight edge? eek..)
been wondering about this: apparently it is possible
to fit volume faders on a tr-626 (...)
or, yes, just use a separate piece you add on (and
get it cut professionally - maybe an engravers could
do it)

I've just picked up a Zero SL 2, so I am having a rethink as to how I will now use the MIDI CPU. I will probably make something specific to one bit of hardware rather than something more generic.
