A difficult question to answer, as it has a lot do with what kind of music you want to make, a bass patch for one style might not fit another.

My thinking is that you use EQ's and FX to tweak the instrument you are using so that the patch melds into the final mix.

I'm amazed that nobody has mentioned IL's Autogun yet, which features
4294967296 (Four Billion Two Hundred Ninety Four Million Nine Hundred Sixty Seven Thousand Two Hundred Ninety Six) presets :o

That they all sound more or less the same, is another matter :D
