Tomorrow the 22. october Apple is going to announce the new iPad...or maybe they will declare themselves bankrupt due to the release of Surface pro 2 ???

Are their any fortunetellers or superheroes who will like to bet on the latter?

Choose the odds yourself.

It has an x64 core i5 processor.

BTW why is this thread obsessed with the Surface? There are now lots of i5 & i7 tablets on the market from other manufacturers.

I've just bought i7 Asus TP300 LA hybrid laptop/tablet. So far it really is the best of both
worlds. And downloaded FLS Groove last night so looking forward to some fun.

Does ASIO4All work on Win 8.1.1 ?

Yes. But it depends on your soundcard driver rather than Windows.

Thanks - bog standard onboard audio chip at the moment (don't know exact spec as not in front of unit at the mo).

Also unfortunately the only screen available in UK was the 1366x768 (rather than full HD) - will enjoyment of the software be marred by this ?

It's always good to have fun. I had a lot of fun when I read several articles quoting that tablet sales decreased a lot more than predicted this year, and that growing will slower even more next year, while light notebooks (real computers) will increase sales a lot.

Since I was one of those that predicted the tablet fever would not last, and was just a fashion, I LOLd when reading this. Where are those who said the iPad was the next big thing, and computers were gone?

It may not be right now, or next year, but the iPad will be gone in a few years, since people start to realize that, behind the fun, it really does not do nothing that can be compared to a real computer running a real OS.

And phablets are also eating a portion of their market too, as Apple realized, launching a 6" iPhone.

But many, many people don't need (or want, or can handle) all the functionality of a full computer. They just want to check their email, browse the net, do some online banking.
I think it's more likely that tablet sales decreases because a lot of them... already have a tablet, and it still does what they want from it. There's no such thing as neverending exponential growth.

Sure, but those will have phablets, that are more portable, do more (you can make phone calls, send sms, mms, etc), and presumably will cost around the same price (the iPhone is an exception, but I suspect it is because Apple doesn't want it to be a menace for the iPad, which it will, at the same price).

The "tablet" is now being attacked on two fronts, by light notebooks and phablets. My assumption is that it won't survive, because it can't compete in neither field.

NOTE: And people look ridiculous taking pictures with their tablets :hihi:

Personally, I don't see the appeal. They're too big as a phone - I want to be able to operate a phone with one hand - and if not used as a phone, a bigger tablet is better to be used as a PC alternative.
Anyway, I have an iPad, for music production (synths, fx), and only for that. I have no other use for a tablet.

You maybe don't, but a lot of people do. And a tablet is not a PC alternative, as more and more people start to realize.

Anyway, since you use your tablet just for music, you are a good candidate for a light notebook. Maybe we meet in a year or so ;-)

I think desktop OS's will merge with mobile OS's. Frankly, there won't be a reason for the double tracked thing we have right now, if mobile devices are on par with desktops or laptops in terms of system power. Therefor Android will have a pretty hard time in the future, when the hype fades. Apple has MacOS. Google has only ChromeOS, and that one is not particularly doing well. And Microsoft has Windows of course. Time for Google to react soon IMO. Or make a deal with one of them.

Already happened... Windows 8.
The merger itself is just a technical matter, from an end user POV that same OS will be very different, depending on the input "device". Microsoft has already understood (->see Windows 10) that no one UI size fits all.

good point

i actually use my ipad to make music, and i still get by with an ipad 3. i am looking to upgrade next year, maybe, but if i only needed it for internet, mail, light gaming etc, i could easily get away with it for much longer

At CES this year there are a slew of full Windows 8, 8-10" tablets in the $200 to $400 range, but the difference is that the processors are now keeping up with Windows (particularly the Core M and other Broadwell CPUs). Interesting times ahead.
