Did this a few months ago and it helps immensely...djanthonyw wrote:What you need to do is put what you have into categories... e.g. reverb, delay, compressor, ect. Do you need a thousand plugins?

I find I work best with a single EQ and compressor. More are useless to me. I have a couple good reverbs but mainly use one. Distortion is where I like to have a variety of plugins, I enjoy the shades and colors that each provide.

For effects I generally just use those in Ableton Live as they suit my purposes. The only things I got outside of Live for are reverb and distortion (and sometimes delay and compression). It's good to minimize as it reduces clutter and when I did have a lot I just didn't use most of them.

I did not do exactly the same, but i got rid of the plugins i surely didn't use for the last year or so. It is a bit more overviewable now.djanthonyw wrote:What you need to do is put what you have into categories... e.g. reverb, delay, compressor, ect. Lust ? ummm.... Oh shait....
That's pretty much the story with all of us, GAS junkies
GAS is similar in many ways to obsessive compulsive disorder.
Treatment : None
GAS hasn't received any major medical attention yet.
GAS is not a clinical condition.
It can be the result of a psychological lack of personality (trying to give an impression of being the best by imitating a famous icon or celebrity or owning gear - or emulations of gear - that was used for making hit records), but this wouldn't explain why musicians "affected" by GAS tend to accumulate cheap gear, not linked to famous brands or music icons

I don't need a thousand plugins.
BUT... (you knew there was a BUT, right?)...
..I do need the 40 I have. They are in categories, except for Audio Damage which is like it's own little mangled-up world.
Note that it took about 5 years of seriously bad GAS to finally stop myself, and in fact narrow down, the pile of plugins I had installed.
Sometimes GAS happens, but so far I've managed to restrict myself to about one plugin purchase every 8-12 months.
Loop libraries, now...
