ipad air 16gb wifi $499
ipad mini 16gb wifi $399

launch 1 november

ipad2 and ipad mini remain in the lineup for $399 and $299 respectively

iworks garageband etc (software) come free from now on

edit:

both new models have retina display, A7 chip and 10hrs battery life

ipad air (ipad5) is 7.8 mm thick and the bezel is 43% thinner compared to older generation (can't recall the exact figure), the guy mentioned that it has 5mp isight camera, 2 mic holes (i guess for a stereo microphone), huge cpu and gpu efficiency improvements (sort of twice as ipad 4 by looking at the graph on the presentation)

:)

Gonna sell my mini and order the new iPad Air ASAP!

The iPad Air is twice as fast but for me which will be using it as a Midi Controller and not as a synth this may not matter? In other words running Lemur with enChord and many pother midi controller apps. I am a desktop experimental musician so battery life and weight are unimportant. However if the Air has better touch response that would be nice!

Will all the apps that worked in the older iPads work on the Air which has 64 bit architecture?

Ipad 3, 4 or 5 should be fine for me. Please comment.

What are the current street prices? The official price: Ipad Air 32 GB Wifi costs $600. So the older iPad needs to be heavily discounted to attract me.

^ There are no street prices. RRP is it.

You probably would not notice any difference with the updated models if you're simply using the touch screen as a controller to send MIDI - that requires very little CPU, although something like Konkreet Performer may benefit.

Yes it's backward compatible, as long as the device supports iOS 7.

Any of these would be fine. A refurbished iPad 3 or 4 from the Apple would work, or check eBay since users will be selling to upgrade.

Don't purchase an iPad 2 from Apple for $400 - that is a crazy price for an older slower model.

Peace,
Andy.

ZenPunkHippy,

Ipad 3 and 4 ran on iOS 6. Many or most of the midi and audio apps were made for iOS 6. Just to see if I understand this correctly; older apps that work with iOS 6 should run fine in iOS 7 and the iPad 5 "Air" which has 64 bit architecture. So if I decide to get the iPad 3 or 4 I should upgrade to iOS 7? Actually I have it narrowed down to iPad 4 or 5. I favor Ipad 4 over 3 slightly because 4 has the lightning dock and a slightly faster processor.

Earlier today I looked at Apple.com for refurbished iPads but unfortunately they were no iPad 3 or 4 32 GB wifi only available. Newegg and Best Buy also have refurbished units and will check them out when I am finally ready to make the decision, which will be by early November.

I can't guarantee anything, but you should find that apps developed for iOS 6 work fine on an iPad 3 or 4 running iOS 7.

An iPad 4 would be a better choice than iPad 3 because it's more powerful. But if you're considering the iPad Air I would go with that. Yes it will cost more, but it's also a little more future proof and it is backwards compatible with apps developed for earlier devices / earlier versions of iOS.

All of the serious developers will update their apps for iOS 7 anyway and these are generally the devs to support, since they'll also fix bugs and add new features.

Peace,
Andy.

Ok. With your help I am tending towards the iPad 5 32 GB wifi only. Unless of course I find the iPad 4 at a huge discount which is unlikely.

The Final question since I will be using it primarily as a mid controller the 32 GB model should be adequate? Should I consider the 64 GB model?

32 GB is fine for MIDI controller only use, and the minimum I would consider for any iPad since you never know how you might use it in the future. There are some great apps available for sketching out ideas etc.

Peace,
Andy.
