Oh god yes! - I would have added some of their stuff too (and Hope Sandoval herself has made some equally wonderful tracks in partnership with others) - Fade Into You, All Your Sisters, Flowers in December, Asleep from today (with the Chemical brothers), All this remains (with Bert Jansch), to name but a few of the best, are all perfect to me.

it must have been '96 or '97 when i happened upon 'fade into you' on the mtv. it was totally mesmerizing.

Everyone has different sense of perfection, no offense, but most song posted, I don't even like enough to listen past first 40 sec.

Mantwat and Coriander by Het Esbelta. Kind of creepy how people die at the concerts with those peaceful smiles on their faces, but man, what a tune. Indescribable.

Am I the only one that sniggered like a schoolboy when I read "man twat"? :hihi:

Perfection has no place in talk of music, because perfection is static. I can never name a "favourite song", because it changes too often. There are songs which stand out to me because they feel right to me more often than others, but to call them perfect would do them no favours.

I could give a list of songs I really like, but which ones I select from the pool of candidates would be pretty arbitrary.

Also, yeah, "mantwat"

I agree with Sendy. But this song always gets to me - not technically great or anything but the drive and energy is amazing.

I can't really agree. The thing I posted is the definitive production and performance of that thing, the phrasing never better, etc.; the sum of the parts as utterly optimal, and the fact of the studio production gives felicities not available elsewhere. that's essentially saying that records are just a particular facsimile of live music.

the very fact of editing tool, and that even in classical music records they are used disagrees fundamentally with that, at least as an absolute.
So, we'll see Miles Davis and totally an improvisation and live aesthetic and emphasis but he laid down records like Concierto de Aranjuez, Sketches of Spain which are studio product. Two different things. The Beatles said that 'I Am the Walrus' couldn't possibly have been done live, cf., Day in the Life; so you'd try to get as close to a perfect rendition down for posterity.

I wouldn't take the word "perfect" so seriously. It's more like an emphatic proclamation of enthusiasm than something that lays claim to some sort of truth. It's like when we say e.g. "the best plugin evah" or "my cat is the best cat that ever lived", or even "nothing beats my grandma's strudel".

In this sense: "I held her in my arms" is a total masterpiece, a showcase of virtuosity unparalleled in this world or any other. Teenagehood captured in a 3 minute pop song.

Oh, and another perfect song:

The only song I can stand by the Pixies is this one which I like a lot:

Lyrics seem a bit weak but that dreamy chorus seems like the essence of the 90's distilled.

In your FACE Sendy! Maybe you wouldn't have such a problem using superlatives to describe art if your jeans weren't so damn tight. Just a thought, yeah?
