I take the liberty of reviving a thread, since it went off the wrong foot.

The original thread can be found here:

Let me summarize:
User MeteoXavier is looking for collaborators, to create songs/remixes fitting to the "Seiken Densetsu 3" soundtracks, with 50% original content, and 50% source material. Ideally in style of Epic Orchestration or Heavy Metal, best if mixed.

"Seiken Densetsu 3" is the sequel to the US/EU known game "Secret of Mana" (Seiken Densetsu 2).

This collaboration is for a longer ongoing remix project attempt by the Remixing Community "OC Remix" (Overclocked Remix).

CORNER DATA:
- you are not being paid for this, this is on purely volunteery basis
- there is no set release date
- you will recieve fame in form of free advertising (YouTube, the OCRemix homepage, maybe Facebook or what else they are running these days)
- please read the rules on OC remix in terms of submitting songs, whether or not you agree with them! (this is important!)
- to make things more interesting, do not submit your track beforehand to OCR or either remix community and therefore make it public. Nobody likes to listen to songs that are already years old.

WHY THE F DO YOU STEP IN, Compyfox?
Simple - I was a OCR'er once myself (I was in charge of the (in)famous "Chrono Symphonic" project, amongst other things like writing tutorials, ...). Actually, a lot of KVRians started on OCR, and slowly moved on to KVR and GearSlutz. These people are now also active and successful in the sampling industry (zircon / Impact Soundworks comes to mind) or as Songwriters for video game companies, TV shows, or have their own gigs running.

This project was started way back, I think the original idea came up mid 2000's, and it finally started 2008. While "Remix Projects" were all the rage over on OCRemix. It's one of the longest running projects. And it looks like OP MeteoXavier needs help to finally complete it after over 5 years. I know the issues with such projects myself, which is why I step in.

MeteoXavier only got off the wrong foot, with the usual KVR drama being involved.

So... if you got some time to waste, and want to participate just for fun. Or since you liked the game, or the soundtrack, or whatever - want to give it a new twist in the process. Get in touch with him. I'm sure he'll help out.

If you want to do electro stuff, nobody is holding you off to write something, then post it on either available remix page (OCR, VGMix, whatever). It just doesn't fit with this particular project theme.

Now let's start from scratch, shall we?

Sadly I never got to play Secret of Mana 3. But I played the first one to death. And I recreated this:

Post

Actually the second, the first one was on Gameboy (Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden/Final Fantasy Adventure/Mystic Quest). The second was Secret of Mana. Still one of the most popular Squaresoft games from back in the day.

And one of the rare RPG's where you can play with three people at once! Something that's not possible anymore, unless it's "Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles" or MMORPGs.

Unfortunately, Secret of Mana 3 was never really ported (officially) into a different language than Japanese. The US translationw as fanbased. And IMO everything post Seiken Densetsu 3, the games were simply trash. Even more experimenting than the Final Fantasy series and Dragon Quest series alltogether.

Your mix is nice. But since I was part of OCR back in the day, at the time they invented certain standards for their remixes, it would not count as remix by their specifications. But a so called "Override" (an almost 1:1 recreation with just new samples).

Still good though. I heard way worse in that section over the course of the last 10 years.

Oh and, before anyone asks:
"Why don't you participate, Compyfox?"

Well, to be honest. I also didn't play that much Seiken Densetsu 3, so I don't know the songs (which doesn't mean that you can't port them). And... I'm more of an audio engineer than I am a songwriter.

I vaguely remember you from OCR back in the day, CompyFox. Did you hang out at VGMix as well?

Post

I was never a member there, due to the old involving dramas (and then the broken page). But I knew (still do actually) a lot of mixers back in the day, and I was always invited to join VGMix if I had the time.

That was mid/late 2000's... a long time ago. I never went back into remixing actually.

Gotcha. I got into the scene around 2004 then left it after a couple years cuz I generally sucked. In the last year I've gotten back into it.

Post

Didn't you participate in the "People's Remix Competition" (PRC) and the theme song competition?

We kind of overlapped. I left (or was asked to go) shortly after I finished Chrono Symphonic, and the management floor decided new submission rules and a remix "lockdown".

Never did anything else over there at OCR other than giving feedback, doing tutorials and helping out new mixers (engineering) anyway. A lot has changed since then. Technology, standards, the games we play these days.

I still remember floods of Final Fantasy, Sonic and Megaman stuff... And around 2005-2007 or so, more and more vocal tracks.

Man, I still love that "Dragon Song" track by remixer Harmony for "Secret of Mana" (even though I didn't like it initially). One of the first remixes with vocals on OCR. Which set new standards as well. After that, hell broke loose in terms of vocalists.

Dragon Song is awesome, as are a bunch of Star Salzman's tracks. Those were some of the ones that blew me away in the mid 2000s when I was still a noob. I never participated in PRC or anything else, just submitted a few tracks that got rejected, then I was like screw it, I'm outta here.

Post

Oh yeah, I remember the "bold standards". Was always against them.

Anyway... just found out that VGMix is still existing. Though the page is now lead by the "ThaSauce" people, and in beta - but working. Might be worth a check if you want to get back in the game.

Or to get back on topic, maybe participate with this project. The "OCR Standards" usually don't apply to remixed albums. Only those tracks that will be featured. Then again, they mostly also passed the checks back in the day, since these tracks acted as promo.

So... yeah.

I have posted mixes on OCR now. I was talking about back in the day when I sent in crappy tracks that I somehow thought would be accepted. Sorry if I was ambiguous in the wording. I've gotten back into video game remixing cuz I've lost interest in writing original music over the last few years. As for the SD3 project, I've never played the game so I don't have any kind of emotional connection to it.
