Am I simply naive, or am I just being paranoid... because, I'm thinking, like, are there some (not a very few) people doing this (How do i make this sound?? posts...) just to get views and listens? 'Cause, like, I saw a couple of these strewn across multiple message boards over a couple weeks and noticed they were posted on the same day with exactly the same wording. Maybe they REALLY needed to make that sound, but...

I caught one of these a while back and (perhaps unnecessarily) called him out on it. It was indeed in exactly the format "how do you make this sound". It's a shame because the track was actually pretty strong and didn't need that sort of stealth hype. Why people think that they're more likely to gain fans this way is a bit mysterious. Presenting your work like this may get more listens, but we all know other musicians are probably the single worst group of people to present your music to if you're just looking for fans. Other musicians are great for honest advice, making networks, and creating opportunities for yourself and others, but hey, that requires a bit of effort/give and take, so why bother?

In some cases, maybe. But well known artists like Avicii or Swedish House Mafia obviously don't need that kind of marketing...

Right. And, I understand the whole 'how to make the skrillex bass' deal. Or, kind of genre wide things. That makes sense. I know most are on the up and up.

When they ain't and someone bothers to help someone, I just feel it's kinda sleezy.

I'm sure it's very hilarious when the sound was made by plugging a microkorg into a q-tron and then there are 20 posts explaining how to do it in massive. But, ya, know.

Good point, because they probably get a free dub or else ain't paying for it (jealous, @$#! em, etc) or...

no $@#!, have you heard the crap musicians (guitar players, dear god) and 'producers' listen to?

Oddly, where I'm from there is a massive 'producer crunk' scene (i dunno what to call it, and i say oddly because some of it is very good but that's not really that strange) with dubs from what the beat makers did with stuff before it was or could be if they could sell it to be made into what amounts to backing tracks for local rap hits and such. Lots of people trade these but nobody will buy them, biggest fans are prob other producers but they sure as hell ain't gonna buy them. But they will buy every Missy Elliot disc in the $5 bin.

So, yeah, you right, dumb marketing ploy. I didn't even think about that. They should be hitting up the 'real' people.
